I have just put £40.00 of Super Unleaded in the car at TESCO's? Whats the score with all this anyway?
-
Martz nah just money happy lol..
Hope you recorded the milage you should get more MPG than regular and abit more ommph! its rated at 97 or 98 octane so regular is like 95 Ron. I just did the same with V max from shell to give it a shot they did give me a key chain for using the stuff  £40 key chain mmmmmm?
jay
-
tesco super is 99 ron, its good sh!t
-
er... i think you all missed the point.
News recently... dodgy fuel from supermarkets down south?
Shouldn't have a problem mate, not much electrical to go wrong on the 8v's, even the rallyes.
Alternatively, it could blow up.
Best of luck.
-
i always use nothin else apart from 99 ron unless its for the company car that just gets what ever is avalible
i think the petrol thing is just a chance you take dont think every one should panic about it no saying were and what ones to avoid really could be any were take it as it comes i say
-
Yes but not for putting fuel in your rallye!
The petrol thing is supposedly down to silicone in the fuel which sticks to the lambda sensor and makes new cars turn into unrunnable coughing spluttering things! I ain't got a lambda sensor and I live oop North!
-
yeah i heard its only new cars affected? there's a lot to be said for old cars
-
er... i think you all missed the point.
Cheers Slick
-
YES!!
You were mad to fill up at Tescos!
But as you only have ancient technology in your car it shouldnt harm it too much!
-
ah, I dont watch the news so I wouldnt of heard about it!
I live in my own little bubble of ignorance
-
i live in the south east and have filled up my car at both morrisons and tesco in the last week or so and have felt no problems. i have been filling up with the good stuff as i thought it was only the 95 octane that was affected
-
Whoa this is a bit of a can of worms. I can't remember where I saw it, but apparently over there the quality of tesco's premium stuff is second only to optimax  I'll try and find out where I saw it, most petrol comes from the same place anyway.
-
found it: http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=14919 (http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=14919)

Apparently its mostly affecting cars with a lambda or oxygen sensor :undecided:
-
Yeah, higher octane's not much use if your engine's not aware of it somehow. not that an oxygen sensor does that
-
well martz as g60's have a lambda probe i'd keep topping it up with nicer stuff!

I have never understood what these lamda dooers do, what are they?
-
I have no idea? Oxygen sensors?

I have no idea? Oxygen sensors?
again, i have no idea :undecided:

Lambda sensors boys and girls.
The are fitted to the manifolds of cars, and measure the concentration of oxygen remaining in the exhaust gases when they are released from the cylinder head. The sensor then sends this info to the ecu of the car which then decides if it is running too rich or too lean and then adjusts the fuel/air mix accordingly. Oh and all digis have them afaik, so it's not that newer technology.
Damage to these, can not only cause damage to the car engine by giving false readings but can also cause your catalytic convertor to fail. So lets say a lambda probe is about £40, and a cat is say £230ish, then there is fitting, which can be say 2 hours to remove all the manifold and surrounding gubbins, you are looking at about £350 for repairs.
Drop in the ocean then.

So if you don't have CAT then the damage is limited? right?
-
Apparently the problem is that the petrol has a higher than normal silicon content and when it goes through the system its sticking to the lambda sensor thus causing it to send incorrect signals to the ECU resulting in the engine conking out, how this results in damage to the ECU I don't know. Slick#13, what you said interested me as I have a digi engine in the car and a spare one in the garage and I've yet to find a lambda or oxygen sensor on either :undecided: although MK2's that were fitted with a cat did have a CO measuring pipe in the exhaust manifold. I think its fair to say this is gonna cost Tesco and Morrison's a few quid now its been proved that the problem was with the fuel they sold
-
its mostly g60's that have a lambda probe, which is digifant 2 and only very few, very late mk2 8v's have them, most digifants are digifant 1 and are not fitted with a lambda probe.
-
Thats O.K then, thought I was missing something
-
nah but maybe slick is :P ho ho ho
-
i have a lambda fitted to the polo, was one of the things that got changed when tryin to figure out why the polo was being a bugger and i actually understood all of what alex said... :smug:
Dinx

Aye uruk sorry should have mentioned that it was later digis that had them, (along with the G's as stated)
Martz, you should be ok, just keep an eye on it, it will soon let you know if there is a problem.
