i bought my first car over the weekend. 93 golf, 1.4 L reg. It has just over 132,000 miles on it. It runs and starts up fine every time. The previous owners kept it in good condition. my question is what are some things i can check (keep checking etc) to make this car last as long as possible. i know some problems are bound to happen. i love this car and want to keep the engine going. thanks alot

keep changing the oil and filter on a regular basis with a decent oil - filters are cheap at euro car parts
might be worth a bit of redex to clean the fuel system out too.
I know its more expensive, but a few tank fulls of Shell V Power would probably help to clean thigns up a little too

How often should i change the oil/filter? also what oil would you recommend?
thanks

its up to you whether you make use ofthe service indicator within the speedo - its easily reset - see sticky in this section
otherwise change the oil every 6k if short journeys, and 10k if motorway use - castrol gtx magnatec is fine

checked out eurocarparts.com. oil filters come to a total of over £13....
