Title: Why de-badge?????
Post by: SuSpEcT-GTII on 28 February 2007, 14:34
I have a question for the panel (thats you lot!) Why do so many people de-badge their front grille? Are you ashamed of your vw?! And why convert to single headlamps? The twin headlamps are one of the defining features of the mk2. Who agrees/disagrees?

Dont get me wrong . . . Im not knocking anyone here! I'm all for being individual, each to their own n all! but I thought it would make an interesting debate . . .

Original front ends all the way!

I'm fully with you on this my man, the other's will say they de-badge to make it look smoother and more aggresive, or to be individual (even though they all do it like sheep!). I'd say it looks to other people like you're ashamed of the marque you're driving, and with some of the Max-Power crew it is sometimes hard to tell what the original car was without badges due to all the bodykit's (that's mainly Saxo's etc, not Golf's on here before everyone starts!)

As for the single headlight's and no red piping I don't get this either, to start off with the single headlight grill was only fitted to non-GTI's, and everyone know's the red piping was the hallmark of the GTI. I don't get it why people would want there GTI to look like a 1.3 driver (grill wise)!!!

Confused as you mate, but it's a design classic, why ruin it?

i agree - oem is much better these days.

too many people have modded their mk2's that oem is now the rarer option.

Each to there own.........

Yeah I'm in agreement too here, but I still had to get a single light grille and see if it looked better in the flesh - nope. Then I tried painting the piping red - nope. So now I'm back to the quad lamp grille

simply because I like it and at the end of the day its all down to personal preference. I have 3 grill choices for when my car goes back on the road but am not sure what I will go with at the time but what ever choice it is its because its the one I want.

I am not trying to De-GTI my car by removing the red outline and opting for a plain black single light grill, merely opting for what I prefer.

I'm all for the oem look however I wanted to declutter the front end of my car. I stuck with a badged grille but went for single lights. I was trying to get the number of different colours down to a minimum.
I still have the original grille tucked away for when I change my mind though ;)

1. Stealth. Lulling people into a false sense of security and then leaving them wondering what hit them.

2. Cleaning up the lines of the car. Decluttering the grill/boot.

3. Some cars have had that much work done to them that the owners remove the badge so it is more about their creation than the original manufacturer's ideas. This rule usually applies to people who spend too much time wanking over max power magazines.

My ideas anyway

my opinion for what its worth...i love the look of the smooth simple debadged and single headlight front ends but equally love the retro liook of a standard golf. however 50 years from now i bet our grandkids are desperatly trying to find the original stuff

Interesting! Its understandable that people do it for personal preference but I dont get the "de-cluttering" thing? How can the beloved VW badge be classed as "clutter"?????    ?  This makes no sense to me!

grandkids?  i'll only be 79 in 50 years time so i reckon i can pull off a mk2 with trilby and tartan blanket on the back shelf!!

Interesting subject.. I think that with the odd exception, its down to age, thats the owner, not the car! younger owners want to make a "Big hit" with the looks of there car, without screwing finances, or the insurance! the grill and badge mod, is cheap easy, and looks pretty cool, the next mod for this age group would either be ICE, or some lowering springs..
The 30+s are probably realiseing that less is more! and the car looks at its best in standard trim, just lowered, and a great wheel and tire combo..

Hmmm sorry to blow your theory Tom but I'm over 30 and I've 'de-cluttered' the front end to some extent and am currently building up an ICE install to fit soon.

I suppose the difference is when I had my first golf at 19 I'd have fitted any old grille and the cheapest sounds I could lay my hands on. Now it's a genuine VAG grille and a complete alpine install. Oh and yeah lowering is on the list for this year!!!

I am more inclined to look at an old car that is in exceptional original, (or nearly original) condition. My car is in good nick, but by no means a show car. What I want from my Golf is a suptle change that is not immediatly apparent, but separates it from a standard one.
When I do see a radically modified car though, ie spoilers where the sun don't shine and wacky paint job that would put the Multi Coloured Swap Shop to shame, and Carlos Fandango go faster wheels, yes I look, but also laugh. IMO, you cannot change a car into what it is not. At the end of the day, a Golf is a Golf and a Saxo is a Saxo. If people want a thoroughbred sports car, either buy one or build one. I have nothing against personalising cars, I am doing it myself, but I draw the line at fitting at fitting skirts that should belong on a hovercraft and disco lights under the sills.
De-badging...well it gives it a clean look and I suppose, a potential low life would be looking for that GTI badge on the car he wants to interfere with.

ive just changed the front badge on my car, ive taken off the chrome effect badge and put back and black GTI badge, making the front end look smooth but it sill has its identity

This is exactly what I mean. I have done the same. I do like tastefully changed cars. The photo's of GTI Joe's car on the projects pages do the man justice. Not radically modified appearance, but enough to make you look twice to see what has been done. I have only just noticed that the plastic rub strips are not there!! Nice.
But if it had massively blown out wheel arches..........................er no.

Just gone back to original 4 lamp grill and ditched the old debadged one. Personally I prefer the original look and the VW logo is cool not clutter! :)

Original!

As these cars get older, I think they look better the way they were designed. Gives it its peroid look.
