Title: On its way out?????

Have a bad feeling about my 88' 8v. it has been driving fine the past while but today the oil light flashed for a few seconds and the engine got very spluttery, i turned her off and it wouldnt start, came back about 20 mins later and all was fine again.
Then took it for another spin to see if it would do it again it lasted for ages this time but the same thing happened after an hour or so oil light flashing then the engine not running properly, had to leave it for a few hours before it would start again and it did start but was not running well at all, once it warmed up it was undriveable and just cut out.

Also, I checked the oil and it is just over the top mark,

I am hoping it is something like the tappets as there was a fair bit of clicking coming from the head but it just seems like the engine has become very shakey and spluttery so I think I should be preparing for the worst.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

could it be an oil pump problem?

Was going to replace tappets and oil pump. Just hop it hasnt gone terminal
