Title: Oil choice
Post by: DarnPB on 24 February 2007, 23:14
As familiar with engines as I am, this is in regards to aeroplane piston engines and their workings. Although car engines I am also au-fait with, and no staranger to, oils I am not.
What oil would anybody recomend for running in purposes? Mineral or synthetic? And what brand?
Planes use a what is called a straight mineral for running in. Basically, it only lubricates and nothing else. (No protectve properties or clensing agents) This allows for a certain amount of wear to take place without fear of glazing the bores. Then ashless dispersant oil is used.
For car engines.........................?????

If your engine has been reconditioned then you should use a cheap mineral oil for running in, and then syna silver from vw is suitable for most mk2 I think its 10-40w mix?
