Hi Guys
I've been lurking for a while and finally took the plunge and got a GTi a few weeks ago. Its an 06 plate which was previously owned by a VW dealers manager so has got some nice extras on it including the MFSW.
Does anybody know what the star button is meant to do on the steering wheel? The manual says it mutes the stereo but it doesn't, the dealer says it mutes the phone, but it doesn't. I've done a search on the forum but didn't find anything.
The car is great and now the few little minor things have been sorted I'm even happier. The only thing wrong now is the star button!
Thanks
Martin

It mutes the stereo on my R32

Yep, agreed with Illyun, it is the mute all sound.
I have the DVD sat-nav, and I'm sure there was a hidden menu item somewhere for this to be enabled/disabled somehow.
MB, what audio system do you have?
-
I too have the DVD Sat Nav and the MFSW. Button works fine and mutes the radio/CD/iPod
I'm soon going to hook up a Parrot Bluetooth and steering wheel interface unit which will allow activation of the telephone controls via the single telephone button on the steering wheel (I'm told the unit reads the Canbus signal). Just got the unit and the leads from the States. Will post an installation guide on this.

Thanks for the replies.
I have the RDS 500 stereo. When I bought the car I got the dealer to throw in cruise control and the iPod link which goes into the glove box as part of the deal. Do you think anything could have got dislodged in the process? Would I be able to see anything if i removed the stereo?
Thanks again

Firstly try operating this when you have the audio selected in the Highline computer. At initial start up my audio controls don't function until I tab to the Audio display in the computer - all fine thereafter so I presume this is the way it operates (I have the DVD Sat Nav audio unit). If it still doesn't work, take it back to the VW dealer for a diagnostic chech and get it reset. No reason why it shouldn't work properly if it was factory fitted.

Just been out to try it with the computer set to audio, and it still doesn't do anything.
Back to the dealer!

This button changes audio source, it goes from radio to CD to aux to TV etc. I have a MY05 GTI with this fitted, and there is a separate mute button with the normal "mute" symbol. (I know there's no TV option but it does try to connect to it, at least on my sat-nav-fitted model)

Yes, but your 05MY is very different to the later units fitted on the 06&07MYs, which don't have the TV button!

Can a garage dooe opening option be added to the steering wheel? ( ive got a fob at the mo that does it )

I stand corrected - the button I described in my previous post that changes sources isn't labelled with a star, that was my failing memory...

Just an update.
The car was booked into a local dealer today (not where I bought it) to have the button looked at, this is the earliest they could look at it. They diagnosed the button assembly on the steering wheel at fault and it needs to be replaced.
The assembly is out of stock and on back order. I was told when I rang up to check progress that it could take up to 6 weeks to get the part in but a couple of days when I collected the car, so who knows!
I thought everything would be ok on the car once this was sorted but my garage door blew shut on the passenger door the other day and has chipped the paintwork and put a small dent in the panel, grr
