Title: Which oil for GTI 2.0 Turbo

Hi guys,

 I bought a new Golf GTI & DSG  a few weeks ago here in Sydney, Australia. There is no information in  manual about correct oil viscosity apart from Castrol sticker  in engine bay.
 I  sent  an e-mail to VW Australia and here is their reply:

 In reply to your email enquiry, I can advise that for information on the ipod adaptor kit please contact your local dealership.

The oil specification that we recommend must be VW 504.00/501.01 and have a viscosity of 10W-40, 15W-40 or 20W-40.   :shocked:

I am not sure about recommended viscosity  particularly 15W - 40 so I forwarded their e-mail  to VW Germany to clarify this. Friend of mine suggested a Castrol Edge 0W - 40 fully synthetic oil which is best suited for hot Australian climate.

Not sure if this helps but in the UK I have a top up bottle of Mobil 1 ESP Formula (Emission System Protection) Fully Synthetic 5W-30 which was dealer supplied when I got the car new last September. Specifically states on rear label 'Approved for VW'.

UK handbook states the following:

With Longlife Service - High-lubricity multigrade oil VW 504 00, VW 503 00
Without longlife Service - High-lubricity multigrade oil VW 501 01, VW 502 00, VW 504 00

Obviously in your (much) hotter climate, a different viscosity and/or temperature range may apply, but VW 504 00 and VW 501 01 are the same as UK specification - Mobil and Castrol are both proprietary brands and would no doubt do the job very well.

How's the weather down there - i'll be visiting next month for a holiday - doing the Melbourne F1 GP and a whole bunch of other things :smiley:

Thank you for your prompt reply. I 'll stick to Castrol Edge 0W - 40 which is available here in Australia.
What do you guys think  about Shell Helix Ultra 5W - 40 ( drained every  3000 miles) ?
Weather is beatufull right now and  it is not so hot as used to be a  few years ago.

Shell Helix Ultra was supplied during all servicing over the last 4 years by the local OPC for my last car - Porsche Boxster 2.7.
Good enough for that, good enough for the GTI :smiley:

Changing every 3000 is good 'old school' practice but we are being advised that the newer long life oils are better and will last longer. If you are keeping the car a while, I would still recommend more regular changes. No doubt the oil is much cheaper down under as in the UK everything costs more !!!

Glad to hear about the weather in Oz - I'll be enjoying it soon enough :grin:
