My Golf GTI 8v '90 has been idling erraticly and i put it down to the car covering 153k. However the car drives beautiful and sounds lovely when i accelerate.
I have been having battery problems and put it down to a loose drive belt. I got a new one and hey presto not only is my battery nice and charged but my idle is very smooth and the engine sounds great.
Its amazing how a loose belt can cause such a headache! I guess its because the engine is not getting enough power from the battery, therefore has to work harder to compensate for this, making the idle erratic. So make sure your belts are tight and your engine is receiving enough battery power!!!!
