Title: Reversing lights not working

Hi

I've got a 1989 8v GTi ( Digi engine ) and have been told by the previous owner that he put a 16v gearbox in it. The reversing light don't work and there are 2 wires hanging by the gear box near the reversing switch. The switch has 2 small male spade connectors, but the 2 wires have large female spade connectors so they don't fit. I've tried linking these wires out to make the switch to see if the lights come on but they don't.

Are the reversing switches the same on both gear boxes????

Some help would be very greatful

the reverse switches differ depending on what year and what car they are from, if you join  the wires together with the ignition on, do the lights come on?
