Has anyone else noticed that at tickover their GTI sounds a little like a diesel ?..a very slight knocking sound...I only really noticed this yesterday when I turned off the climate control...now I'm a bit worried there's actually a problem..suppose the only thing for it is to take it up to the dealer and have them laugh at me....oh well...

Evo commented on this....

thanks for the link....yea, I've got used to that embarassing startup noise...this is when it's sitting idling ..it just worries me I've not noticed it before...plus if I lift the bonnet it really sounds 'tappety' as well...

someone on one of the other forums found this link on a GTI in the USA.....the is almost the same noise

At last, someone agrees with me!

I had that on my 06 plate GTI so it must be normal.

The "start-up" noise is probably the secondary air injection pump - should only run for the first 30-90 seconds imediately after a cold start.
The "tappety" or metalic sound could either be the timing chain, or maybe even the fuel injectors pulsing.

Yup - I have commented that the engine makes more noise than the exhaust! I thought I was just being picky after the lack of noise from the RX-8 engine.
Much more tappety than the diesel we had, but still there.
