Gents
I don't know much about the Golf cabriolet range so I hope some of you could help me decided if it's the car for me.
Is there a best model to look for, best engine type for reliability and mpg.
Any points to look out for when viewing a cab.
Should I buy privatly or is there an accepted Cabriolet specialist I should contact?
Thanks.

i'd say the best cab to go for is the sportline or the rivage(1.8 gti).it has a nicer interior than the other models i have seen and is more rare.check for damp carpets(water leaks) and check space between each panel(crash damage).they tend to be a bit more expensive but are worth the xtra cash.

check all those rubber seals around where the roof sits. they are expensive to replace if rotten.
nice choice of car, i must say! ;D

Any with a Clipper kit look a bit more sporty - the Sportline is my favourite, which is why I bought one. GTI engine, Recaro interior, Big Bumper kit, and power hood. They come in red or black. Mine gets loads of attention in the summer.

Here's a good buyers guide:-

If you scroll through to page 5 you'll find mk1 specific information.

Thanks for the information guys. I like the look of the Rivage model. Did they come with leather seats and leccy windows etc.
Was there no Mk 2 cabriolet?
-
Certain models come with leccy windows, but they are fairly cheap and easy to install, if you want them in.
They didnt make any mk2 cab, just continued with the mk1 upto the introduction of the mk3

All I can say as a part time driver of an 83Y ragtop GLi (1.6i GTi engine-5spd) is go for it, just bear in mind the age of the car when you buy it and be willing spend a little money on older cars.
Although a lot of people prefer the clipper kit (you'll see quite a few about) look out for crash damage it may be hiding, check the usual spots for that, panel alignment, bumper supports etc. Other than that the clipper kits are cool. Original Karmann no body kits is my preference, single headlights etc.

I think I may go for a Rivage but they seem much more expensive than other cabs. Are they worth the extra? and will they hold their value better than other cabs?
Are the Mk 3 and 4's not popular? they look much bigger and heavier.

I've got a Rivage, I did pay over the odds for it but I wanted it so I got it, (things are worth as much as people are prepared to pay for them right!) but I absolutely love it. Mines green and has leather interior, heated seats, electric hood etc, they did them in blue too but I don't think they had leather interior as standard but I think all the green ones did. I'd say you want to go for a Rivage or a Sportline as they have the best spec. One good summer in a rag top and you'll never want another hard top, guaranteed !
