Title: Kiwi shoe polish for GTi bumpers with pics
Post by: Simon8v91 on 18 February 2007, 14:51
I read about this elsewhere on this forum and decided to give it a go.  I found autoglym bumper care to be good but only lasted a few weeks so decided to try this.
First 3 pics of the car before a wash, polish and bumper treatment.  The rear bumper and front spoiler plastics are in the worst condition.
I then used autoglym car wash, super resin polish and Kiwi!  Its getting a bit dark but I think the pics still show a good result.  The rear bumper looks much better.
I left it overnight and was pleased to find that the dew had not ruined it!  I decided to try a second coat as others in this forum had suggested:
It looks good and is darker!  I probably prefer the look after 1 coat.  I will post pics again in a few weeks / months to see how long it lasts.  The stuff is £1.88 from Tesco  and 1 bottle did 2 coats with enough left for perhaps 2 more.  I found the best technique was to do one wheel arch or bumper at a time applying with a circular motion where possible, then buff off any excess with a rag.

Thanks to the other folks here that suggested this.  I have found many great ideas and helpful posts here.  I think I will try an ATF flush at the next oil change!

Apply a few coats when you wash the car and it lasts months and months...

funnily enough i used the same(ish) product this weekend aswell! It was Morrisons own shoe scuff polish, i think its slightly thicker than the normal wax stuff, went on very well (but it runs like mad if u have any drips of water left on the plastics!

pics here: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=54984.0

it works SO much better than back to black (which is about 75% of a can to one application!)

I am definately in for some of that stuff, back to black is s***e it lasts about 1 day at best before the bumpers start to look faded again

I guess it takes under an hour to go round the plastics once, but its hard to gauge due to half time tea breaks and talking to neighbours!

Yes I should have said its best to make sure the plastics are dry before you have a go at this.  Any clean rag will do for buffing of the excess.  The kind of cloth you would use for polishing the paint work will be fine.

I am pleased to say it passed the first hurdle coz it still looks good after last nights rain!

This stuff rules, I did all my bumpers etc last week and still looks great. The finish it gives really sets off the whole car. My 8V is magic black so the bumpers etc really let it down, now it looks sweet as.

Cheers for the suggestion, nice one

As promised some pics after a quick wash 3 weeks later.  As you can see the kiwi is still on and looks OK (but has begun to fade a bit).  The weather has been bad since I did it in mid february so I am pleased with it

I have noticed there is an excellent thread on CGTI about restoring faded bumpers.  The great thing about the shoe polish is its cheap, quick and easy  http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=90414

Anyone else got any pics to post?  Photobucket.com and use the IMG code

yep used the same stuff when i cleaned mine, this is the second time ive put it on in 3 weeks. so if it keeps lasting that long each time then im more than happy to spend half a hour working on the trim

I gave it the once over with the kiwi again

The stuff was still looking OK from mid-February but I had just given the car a polish so I though what the hell!

Before: (http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u242/SGB67/SuperResin2.jpg)

After: (http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u242/SGB67/UltraDeepShine3.jpg)

Hope this thread persuades any sceptics. I used to be!

like i said earlier in this thread i bought the cheapo stuff and it still work's a treat....

and I also informed a few people (i will call the grey bumper brigade) at vw summer night's and they were sceptible so i pointed them to this thread...the only problem i have found is on my rear spoiler as this is pu-rim (harder plastic) and it dosen't absorb shoe polish!! so that still get's autoglym
Title: Heat Gun???

Perhaps it hardens the polish, making it even more durable?

Dunno about trying it though....on plastic bumpers!

if you look at ur bumpers theres small grain pattern i think heating this will ruin its pattern. stick with the kiwi its pure OWNAGE for the price and hassle!

the hot air gun trick really works but you have to be a bit careful, a hairdrier is safer but takes longer. it sort of melts the plastic slightly and the polymers in the plastic rejuvinate. well worth a go, i'm about to do my passat as that has more plastic than you'd belive! i'll do before and afters of the hot air gun method. word.

Right - Mk3 is getting a good clean this weekend.  I've used the autoglym stuff before on bumpers, but you guys have converted me to shoe polish.

My bumpers are pretty hellish, so i'll post pics hopefully after i've done it.

Watch this space.......

Cleaned car last weekend, used kiwi with the applicator.

Result is A1!  Only problem is doing the top of the arches, but a cotton bud and a wee bit of kiwi sorts it out, just need a little bit of patience.

Was a little worried when i used it on the spoiler as it streaked a bit, but it dried in well.  Water proof too!!

Definatly using Kiwi every time i wash my car.

I'll add my two pence worth to this, someone recomended it to me on here and I've not looked back... pics in my dub project thread in my sig.
As for the life of the shine, I've had about four months out of it in winter before it needed doing again, although I applied two coats in the first instance.

Incidentially, I've used Autoglym leather cream on the mrs' handbags, that works a treat... and I've used super resin on my front door...
