i know a mk2 16v gearbox will fit my mk3 8v but will a mk3 16v gearbox fit and how would the ratios work out?
because mk3 gearboxes are becoming like hens teeth are there any other alternatives?
do any of you guys have a gearbox you want to part with for a reasonable sum?

the mk3 16v gearbox wont fit a mk3 8v ,have a look on ebay there are always some 8v boxes on there.
-
won't fit due to the 16v being a hydraulic clutch..... the mk3 8v is fitted with an 020 type box which are fitted to 1.8, 2.0 and 1.9 diesesl vento, golf, passat and corrado's..there will be a 3 digit code for the box which will help with correct ratio's..the 1995 8v gti box is no different to a normal 1995 2.0 golf box for example until it comes down to price....And I know a vw breaker that talk's shi7e saying the gti has a special box and that's why there more cash!!!

cool, thanks for the fast response fellas.
i will keep looking for a box. no rush yeh but reverse is very noisy atm.
i am an engineer but never messed with car gearboxes, how difficult and expensive would it be to rebuild one myself?

they aint rocket science, but not straight forward... Why not take a read of haynes to see what you want to do.
