My gearbox is a bit strange! Firstly it makes a slight crunch into 2nd (worse when cold) and secondly when the engine is at runnig temp 5th can be hard to get into....any ideas?

It makes a crunch into 2nd gear because the 2nd gear synchromesh is worn.
Its a common problem on golf gearboxes. You can have it repaired but it can be expensive. Some people reckon changing your gearbox oil can help, although I can't remember the name of the oil, i'm sure someone will sayb in a nother reply.
I was fed up with mine and had it changed with a VW specialist, for about £150. Its like new now!!
The synchro ring was only £20 but they have to take the box apart to get at it and thats where the cost comes in.
I'm not sure about 5th though, maybe the linkage isn't lining up properly?
Good luck

i have to agree about the fifth gear, mine started crunchin & was resolved by adjusting the linkage slightly.

Yes it could be the sync on the 2nd gear, but try adjusting the linkage first.
Reason being, just did a gearbox swap on my original, (now my mates) Golf 2 to a MK3 box. Whist we were doing it, we removed the linkage in case we broke it, and now 2nd feels like it does not want to go in fully and gives the occasional crunch, especially when cold. We just need to adjust it back slightly. The same will also go for 5th gear.
Check that first. It could save you a box change.

Hi Paul, gald to see you're still running the golf.
I had exactly the same 2nd gear problem with my first 16v, 2nd gear crunch when cold, drive a mile and its fine. Common on golfs and the box can last for ages with it like that, just ease it in real slow for the first mile or so. The difficulty getting into fifth when warm I had on my second 16v, it was wear in the lower linkage bush. This is a large orange bush (when cleaned up) and the main linkage rod from the bottom of the gearstick runs through it, its right next to the exhaust down pipe and when it gets warm it goes a bit soft so you don't quite the travel in the linkage when you push it across to fifth. Its worth renewing all the nylon linkage parts, the kit is cheap, it just a bit of a pig to fit but when done it makes the shift 'feel' like new. It won't cure 2nd gear though. The special gearbox oil mentioned is made by 'Redline', they do many types, I can't remember the particular one, ('MTL' or something like that). I tried using it in my gearbox, there was a small improvement in 2nd but it didn't fix it but what did happen is because its a thinner oil it set the driveshaft seals off leaking a bit. I've heard that many experience this (its vvvv expensive as well). As mentioned you could try adjusting the linkage on the spline to cure the 5th gear problem but usually if you then get 5th OK you have trouble getting reverse and sometimes you get first instead . The fact that its happening when warm points to knackered bushes. Hope this is helpful. J

As allready said check the gear linkage is correctly set up and before you bin the gearbox you could try the Red line MTL gearbox oil, from what I have seen a few on here have used it and it does help !

(I think its the seventh one down the page )
