Hi guys,
Engine is coming out at the weekend I have an engine crane for the weekend and an engine stand to put it on once out, I will be on my own Saturday and with a helping hand Sunday, My questions are........
What special tools will I need?
Any advice on the actual undoing of bits and removal?
Best way of removing engine (front off lift a bit move forwards or bonnet off and up and out?
Any other genrally useful tips?
Thanks in advance

No need to take the bonnet off (waste of what little time you have). Label wires up which you think you wont remember where they go or are not obvious where they go! You dont need any special tools as such, just a good collection of sockets and spanners.
The one thing you will have most trouble with (I did) is splitting the manifold from the downpipe! I'll give you a bit of advice here though... you can get to the front 3 nuts from under the car with a long extension bar on your ratchet or breaker bar. The back 3 can only be gotten to from the top. Use a 17mm spanner cut in half or a moon type spanner (looks like a C shape kind of) due to the lack of room around that area. I found it easier to work on if the upper half of the inlet manifold was removed.

job for today/tonight.... soak them manifold nuts in PlusGas, Duck Oil or WD40 in preperation...
-
You will need the special star key bit to unbolt the inner cv joints from the flanges and yeah as pegasus says the manifold can be a b!tch.
Regarding the wiring, get yourself some tyraps that have the label flag on them and numbers them 1,2,3...........put them on each wire you remove then write yourself a key to the numbers on a piece of paper. It's pretty obvious where they all go but best to save any headaches if possible.

Hehe... I was about to say about the M8 Multi Spline Bit for the CV flanges...
-
if you're taking the g/box out aswell its a lot easier to drop it down to the floor and lift the a car over or drag it out from underneath :smug:

^^^ not in a mk2, whole front end comes off and you just pull it forwards.

:embarassed: Didn't think of that

Well I have an engine crane and stand also got an M8 Spline drive bit for the driveshafts and a big tin of plusgas for the bolts, genny is full and socket set is warming up! all out in a weekend should be doable if all goes according to plan! where does the engine bolt onto the stand never used one before always had a bench to work on not this time though!
-
the engine will bolt to the stand using the bolt holes where the g/box would go (have you got some M12 threaded bar?)
-
it is easyer to keep down pipe conected 2 manifold but seperate it from middle pipe, drop the whole lot take off front panle pull it all forwards saves so much time good luck
-
I have now thanks Pegasus :)
Piccie of it looking like it's been hit by a bus! not bad at all to strip down Exhaust was a pain but all doable from above itching like a bugger from the heatwrap on the manifold :(

Diagnosis new gearbox and Ve can rebuild it!
-
good stuff! its not too bad a job is it?! the re-build will be fun though, its amazing how much space an engine takes up when its in bits!
-
No not too bad better than I expected and only 1 dodgy nut on the gearbox that needed some dremel power! Stripping it down over this week and weekend then clean it all up and see whats what and which bits need renewing, got quite a list of bits that I want to do but see how bad other bits are first! I have boxes on standby to fill with engine!! new gasket set and head bolts to start with and then on from there!!
I just got myself an 8v gearbox which is now sat out in the garage and I'm debating whether to get it rebuilt or not!
-
Picture time, she's almost completely in bits now! can't get the oil cooler off as the nut is bigger than my biggest spanner, and I had to buy a Spline drive set and take the exhaust cam almost out to get the socket in! Other than that I'm getting there!!
Piston and bores look fine not sure whether to do the piston rings or not...?
