Title: edition 30 rear valance option ?
Post by: bmx on 15 February 2007, 11:39
ok as we are all getting nearer thought i would throw this mod up for debate.

i personaly wish that the edition 30 had got this already, but it hasnt so i have bought a roll of quallity satin black vinyl to do the job (loads spare if anyone want to purchase some for a small fee ).

however after looking at the rear valance it seams the piece around the exhaust is a seperate bit. i dont think the vinyl will cover it without creasing.so it might have to be painted. the rest of the valance i can stick the vinyl to no problem, it looks quite easy and there is a line to work to.

question is do i leave the exhaust bit silver or does it look a bit MG ish

put a black honeycomb valance on my TT too

a few photos for you to mull over.

hmmmm....

IMO I prefer it colour coded, makes the back look lower, infact all the colour coding makes it look lower.

You imagine how much lower it will look when it IS lower !

I have been thinking of this too BMX - i had a good look at my car the other day in this area and there are quite a few curves in different directions - the valance is different to a normal GTI. My idea was to make a template out of masking tape first and cut to shape and see if it flattens out to give the correct shape of vinyl. If it doesnt i may have to spray this area - this is the last option of course. The bit around the exhaust i deffo think that this should be black and spraying (and dropping the exhaust) looks like the ony option.
The third option would be to strip the paint and reveal (hopefully) unpainted black plastic????

Without doing this in my opinon it makes the Golf look as if it has a big bottom!

By the way did you sell your TT - my misses keeps badgering me to get her one?

i know what you mean daz about it altering the look of height, i think the black valance makes it seem wider

tell me about it!! how much time do I waste at work clicking refresh!!!

I'm not sure about this mod, and stripping the paint!!!, I think vinyl would be the best option. I agree that this will make the car look wider (similar to the BMW 1 Series "M" rear valance.

I reckon you should vinyl it. It gives it a more sporting look and breaks up the colour a bit. IMO i think the rear looks boring completely colour coded.  I also think the trim around the exhaust looks quite cool. It will definately finish it off but i'm thinking you should have the trim in silver to match the paintwork.

How about some carbon fibre sheeting. Red weave for a red car, black and grey weave for any other colour. I think it would look quite trick, especially with carbon mirror inserts and the middle section of the front also in carbon. Only IMO but if it doesnt work, hey it's not cost too much!

mmm - have thought about this one but the stuff your talking about all comes from Halfords and thats all that would stick in my mind if i were to see it - silver car - red weave - HALFORDS !!!!!

I'm having problems getting this bloody vinyl - most places are giving it a no, no for satin black - and others are saying that the matt stuff is for shows and will shrink once weathered over time...... SO THE QUESTION IS......

What stuff have you previous vinyl dudes used??

I think all things considered I may go for a spray in dark Metallic Grey and colour code with the middle front section of the lower front valance.

A bit like the OEM colour of the new S3
