I have just brought a golf mk3 gti[aweek a go] and don't no if its a 8v or 16v ,Can i tell by looking at the top the engine,the car is a 97 r reg. :P :P :-X :-X

on the top of the engine if it says DOHC in big letters ,then its a 16 valver dohc stands for double,over,head,cam ie, its got 2 cams therefore is a 16valve

Not keen on the 'under the bonnet' side of things then? Its well worth learning a bit.can save a few quid for styling mods.

Sounds to me a 16v, you could check on top of the engine like Black_VR6 said. Or on your reg papers. If you dont know if its a 16v or not, what have you told the insurance company????????

havent got the log book through yet, just told the insurance company its a gti, hopefully they know when i gave them the reg no.
Im gonna check my insurance certificate tonight just in case.
