what do i have to change if anything regarding the timing if i am to put a gti cam in my driver?i have heard that the cam releases a bit more 'oomph' at higher rpm than the standard cam so am wanting to make this modification.Any ideas? cheers!

do it :)
The timing marks on the cam sproket are the same s onowt to worry about there.
You might want to get an 8v GTI K-Jet dizzy, and make a new timing mark on your flywheel for 6 degrees BTDC to get the most out of the extra advance you can dial in

change the whole head! its even MORE fun!

RubJohnny, do you still have the freebie head?!?!what do you mean by marking the flywheel?

Freebie head is gone, unless you mean the 1.6 GTI head? If so it wont fit your engine ;)
On your flywheel is a 19degree BTDC mark which may not offer enough advance for the GTI cam. The Haynes manula shows you how to make your own 6degree line by measuring from the TDC punch mark. You'll need to remove the green bung from the top of the gearbox, then you'll see this:

The small round punch mark is the TDC mark used to set the static timing, and the red mark is the BTDC ignition timing mark.
