Title: sunroof seal fitting

Hi guys, does anybody know how to fit a new sunroof seal, I have the seal, but have no idea how to take the sunroof apart to retro fit...Is this something to do myself or is it best left to the dealership, ( I have had no joy in finding a garage to fit this for me). The sunroof is a retractable metal one, on a '87 golf.. ???

My sunroof cloth cover (inside) was torn so i replaced it with acoustic carpet once i took my sunroof out...


There are 5 clips at the front edge of the sunroof (inside).

once you have removed these, open the sunroof and unscrew all the screws and take the wind reflector off too.

the inner sunroof bit should now be easy to push up and slide out from the top of the roof. (Take care not to scratch paintwork)

Once this inner bit is out you will be able to see the screws that hold the sunroof in place.

That is as far as i needed to go with mine.

erm how much did you pay the sunroof seal m8 as my local vag wants 30 quid for a bit of rubber me think this a bit steep  :o thxs

 I have been reading the forum for about a year and nicking everyone's knowledge without contributing, so I thought it was about time I paid my way.

My wife and I run 2 Big Bumper 3 door 16 valves as our every day cars. Mine is a 91 Tornado Red with 122k and hers is a 90 Atlas Grey with 50k.

Anyway, you don't have to remove the wind deflector. Just wind the sunroof back half way and pull down on the leading edge to pop out the 5 clips referred to. Then slide the lining panel back and fully close the roof. Remove the front guides by undoing 2 cross head screws on each side. You will see 2 little leaf springs at the rear. Take them out by sliding them inwards. Now loosen, 2 crossheads on each side and slide out the rear mounting plates. You can now lift the roof out.

Turn it upside down and remove the half dozen screws that hold on the rear rain plate. You can now fit the new seal. I was quoted ?37 plus vat from VAG so I neatly fannied it up with black gutter seal and its now good as new.

I feel better for that and hello to you all.

oh then 30 quid not a bad price then  ;D still a lot of money for a bit of rubber..
