Title: Tot hose who have lowered..
Post by: mattneck(Beavis) on 10 February 2007, 17:59
Standard shocks, -35mm springs..

Shortened shocks, with matched springs.. at -35mm..

With standard shocks, reducing them by that 35mm, is going to lsoe that buffer zone, so theyre gonna bump, hard.

With a sprots kit, are the shocks shortened so even with that spring reduction, the buffer is there still?

Just a thought

if you just have shorter springs with standard shocks then it tends to put more stress on said shocks, so its probably advisable to have gas shocks.

with these aftermarket kits you can get the norm is that the shocks are shortened too as well as the springs.

hope that helps

as i thought, more stress, but then i've been told gas is quite tough and you feel a lot through it, admittedly in rubjonnys car i didnt notice a difference..

these kits due to being shortened also, i take it will give the same damping characteristics of standard shocks at standard height, but without the stress?

Also on ebay, theres kits available frogermany, shortened shocks et springs for around 140/150 with postage on top.. but then these jamex kits for 180 or so in Golf+ adverts look tempting.. I've got to the point where the car has been borught to standard, but.. i can feel the rolling and handling in the corners and feel myself having to slow considerably for them, no 40 on a roundabout in the 50 areas after the first time i did it, i nearly cacked myself thinking i was gonna roll over

lol, mine doesn't feel like that at all, its got 113k on it, but never driven one with standard dampers so I don't know, I havn't driven it for 6 months but I remember it cornering and riding better than my then standard bora. If you dont want a hard ride but want good handling I'd say either just uprate the shocks for a good gas set or get the eibach springs as they are very comfortable and maybe some bilstein short piston B4 dampers, the weitec suspension kit at £250 is meant to be very very good as well its made by KW. What wheels are you running? I have 14s on mine so there will always be loads of comfort even with harder suspension, the other important thing is to make sure bushes are in good order as they can give a harsh ride.

do you mean put the eibach springs on standard shocks, or on shortened ones? this is why im thinking go with one of the full kits with the matched shortened shocks and springs..

other thing is i have skinny 13s, so, lowering probably wont do much, altohugh it will cut some of the air from below, its only a though, i dont know if it will ever materialise

if you can afford it, get the weitec kit, its good for the money, if you cant get eibachs, save up and get shocks later, its easy to lower a mk2 you can do it on your driveway.

I had Weitec on our last golf, and it was crashy to say the least. Bit of a shame. I'm on Boge Turbo Gas with -40mm springs of unknown origin, although as they're red they're probably Jamex.. and it's much better.

I have lowered by about 60-65mm on coilovers, handles great in the dry... bad in the wet!

See the car in my sig, thats my daily, and the Eibach springs have been on the car for about two years now. I can't recommend them enough, they are ideal on a daily driver, and the ride / handling compromise is spot on. The springs are properly progressive too, really help reduce body roll.

Roll is the biggest problem at 4x4 height, want to track down an ARB from a gti or soemthing, but, ive been told the dangers of attempting removal

how much did that set you back all in all?

mine I forgot to say in my previous reply uses boge turbo shocks and standard gti springs and it rides fine and handles very well for 113k!

I got the springs brand new on ebay, but at about half price, which was about £50.

Gas shocks can be got here:-
