can any one tell me wot size tool i need to take the head off my mk 2 1.6, and a step by step guid plz on how to change ir all
-
any one plz??? ??? ??? ???
-
just keeping it at the top as i need to no asap
-
surely rocker cover is something like a 10mm nut
and head bolts are a torque bit. be carefull as they are f**king tight, cheap torque bits can be known to twist.
so if buying the tool, by the more expensive one.
-
yeh, they can be very tight, just to ask why are you taking the head off??? remember use a big bar instead of a little one it will ease turning and decrease any chance of the bit snapping!!! and befor you put it back together check your manual because they might be stretch bolts and if so you will need new ones, if you need any more tech info msg me and ill look it up in my tech books at work :)

Dubslug
If you want the work done then bring it up to woking for myself and Modulator to do.
Why leave it to amateurs?
By the way all head bolts on vw's are stretch bolts.
-
have fitted a new head and that but now it wont fire over, think the timings out, also got gti cam in there will that cause probs???
-
it probs is timing make sure all the relevant marks are lined up on the distributor, and all the pulleys! either that or you have forgotten to connect something back together again! :P
-
would if i could start the thing, the haynes book of lies says line the crank pulley up with the notch on the dizzy pulley?? is this right??
if so wots the mark on the case behind the crank pulley for??
-
Match the the two notches to each other on the bottom end ie crank pully wit the altornators pully wheel, they both have a line on( this must be done with the cam belt off, at the top end there is a punch mark on the gti cam pully, this should line level with the top of the head, no 1 cyinder (nearest the cam pully) make sure the valves are both shut, ie the buket tapets are not been pushed down!
Its a lot easter if you get the manual, I'm just in the middle of doin the head on my gti 1800 and cant get the manifold!
Hope that helps?
-
so the line on the cam cover means nothing??
-
if your settin up for timin you shouldn't have the cam cover on!
-
its not but theres an arrow on it didnt no if it was important???
-
Now you've cofused me and I'm doutin my self, bugger!
Best bet is to call up veedub tomorrow and ask to talk to a tecnhian, i do it all the time!!!!!

Check this, shows the timing marks.
-
there are three timing marks
1 is on the cam sprocket this lines up with the corresponding mark on the piece of plastic behind the cam sprocket. the cam sprocket will be stamped with the letters t c with a cut out between them line this cut out up with the arrow.
the second one is on the crank pulley at the bottom, it is stamped again and lines up with the arrow on the piece of plastic behind it
the third one is on the distributor body, line this mark up with the rotor arm by rotating the distributor body in the block.
if all three are lined up and the belt fitted correctly then it should be ok
this is what we did when golfvr6 did my cam.
-
cheers guys i have got it running now, aint perfect though so gotta get it all check with timing tools etc, 6 can u do that???
-
Hey MK1 that site you posted is a bit bonkers, check the firing order he quotes.
"However, remember the firing order (1-4-3-2) so you can put the spark plug wires back in the correct plugs"
mmmmmm wonder if his car started after doing that?
-
i thought that but was unsure so i didnt post, sounded well dodge, i thought the over tensioning of the belt bit sounds dodgy! ???
-
Sounds to me dubslug that you need to get a stroboscopic timing light on it to make sure its firing at the correct time.
Its normal for one of the pulleys to be slightly out as its hard to stop them from moving when fitting the new belt.
-
Dubslug you have mail ;)
You don't need to take the cam cover off to set the timing.
-
Oops, sorry lads, I just looked at the pictures ;).
Steve.
-
cheers 6 went to richards and he has sorted it out for me, top man rich thanks mate. can prepare for the mot on friday now lol, only lower ball arm joint and both front brake pipes to do tomorrow lol
-
Is that both flexible front brake hoses? make sure you get a 11mm brake pipe spanner otherwise the pissy little bolt will round off.
-
think ive got one, or dad has lol. changing them is it just a case of undo and change then do back up??
keep the fluid res open while doing it?
