Hi all just joined forum as i have decided to buy a mk3 pretty soon, my only problem is which model. Do i go for a VR6 or a 2ltr 16v GTI as i have heard good and bad points about both.. So any advice about both models would help

Drive both and get insurance quotes for both :) I did an picked a VR6, but you may choose differently. Depends what you want

if you go to drive both,go in the gti first,if you go in the vr first the noise/pace will settle it straight away! try the gti 16v then keep an open mind for the vr6. i had an 8v gti which i then replaced with a vr6" they are superb cars just make sure you get a good one! also weigh up repair costs as anything that says vr6 is usually twice the price of gti's! my vr6 was great, unti lit all started to go wrong,so i got it all fixed and sold it on and got a mk2! special mk2 mind u,couldnt live without the noise!

16v.
VR6's sound great and go fast in a straight line but are nose heavy and like Slim says, If if goes wrong it'll cost you an arm and a leg.

16v over vr6
The abf is a great engine it is tough and easy to mod, out of the box a bit slower but you will catch a vr6 in the corners. 3dr vs 3dr
And it has traction control (EDL) its automatic and cuts out above 25mph (40kph)

Cool insurance is not realy a prob as it is going to be a 2nd car and just generally my little project as i am into the modifying side of things. Also another question what tuning is avaliable for both models obvously other than filter, exhaust, chip e.t.c

There's no question about it.......
VR6

This is where it gets expensive with the VR - I genuinely believe that the best you can do to a VR if you want more than 200hp is to fit an LSD and supercharge it for about 3-3.5k all in

No comparison....gotta be a VR6, once you've driven one you'll be hooked..

the vr is very nice i had one for a while 3dr highline but it went wrong and parts r not that cheap but it just seemed to always be going wrong,so i sold it and got a 16v gti and i love it and so far it not gone wrong its got heated leather and air con so its just like the vr but cheaper to run
