Post by: theBatch on 07 February 2007, 15:49
As title says, im interested in magazines (both past issues and current one) with Edition 30 articles in, so if you could post up the magazine name and issue number that would be great.

Yes i know, im turning into a Ed.30 geek.  :nerd:

Here's one to look for:-

March edition of Volkswagen Driver should have the full roadtest of the Edition 30 (said so in Feb 07 edition).
This should be good as it always has performance test data like 0-60 and in gear accelleration(actuals and not just the factory quotes) and should put the comparisons up with other like vw cars.

The only thing I don't know is which version they will test...manual or DSG

It's available by subscription here: http://www.volkswagendriver.co.uk/ (http://www.volkswagendriver.co.uk/), or you can "borrow" a copy from your friendly neighbourhood VW dealer when the sales staff aren't looking.

It's not written by VW is it? Not exactly impartial if it is!! Is every car amazing??

I think it's an independent publication, but with strong links to VW-Audi. It's good for reviews on tuning and mods.

I've always bought mine from WHSmith's

Just looked in February's magazine and the March edition is due out on the 21st Feb

I have about a dozen of these mags and all the reviews and test drives I have looked at were around 4 pages long plus a page of stats.

February's edition also had a good review on the Superchips bluefin Golf GTI.... albeit without any performance times. (mentioned Superchips S3 roadtest at 306bhp!!!)

Its a fantastic magazine but VERY hard to get hold of - I subscribe.  I've looked into newsagents and WHSmiths in Ipswich, Cardiff, Newport, Birmingham, Norwich and Northampton and only ever found it stocked in the main WHSmith in Birmingham city centre - contrast that to Audi Driver Magazine which is a sister publication and is EVERYWHERE?!!   :undecided:

Just a thought (que the jokes!) - maybe the reason Audi Driver is everwhere and Volkswagen Driver is v.hard to find - there are no other magazines dedicated to Audi, but there are a handful of differnent mags to cater for VWs??  :nerd:

This just in -  Top Gear not too impressed with Ed-30.
They think the wheels aren't a patch on the Monzas.
They're sooooo right.

Is that TopGear magazine or the programme?

Are they saying that it is JUST the alloys they aren't happy with or is there more to it.

Don't tell half a story

Let's have the rest of the details.

IMO the ED30 alloys are passable but if I were marking out of 10 it would be a 6 and a "must try harder!" as they aren't special enough

I think the reason the Ed30 wheels are disliked is because of the central hub of the wheel - it's huge, and virtuall covers the brake disc and red calipers, whereas on the Monza IIs the holes go right up to the bolt holes, and you can see all the disc and caliper.  Just my HO anyway!

The stig in the Top Gear magazine didn't like the ESP/ABS on the edition 30 much.

I wonder if the reason behind why the Stig thought the standard GTI was more balanced than the ED 30 was that he was using the car on the limit and the extra 30bhp and resulting extra speed means that the driving aids come in a lot more and spoil his fun?

How can a car with 30bhp extra and all the same chassis and brake addenda not be better?

Post by: Phil mcavity on 12 February 2007, 17:56
Fingers crossed, the ed 30 gets a review later this series on top Gear, be interesting to see what they recon if the Standard GTI Is a better or worse choice when buying new, testing the chassis with the extra power, whether the brakes are up to coping with the xtra power, whether it understears like a pig and cant cope as well with 230hp and 200 is a better balance. As like most mags are saying about hot hatches, its not the xtra hp wins the day, its whether the car is capable in handling it,and laying it on the road. i wait with hopeful anticipation

its was out of my price rate illyan, i wanted a fully loaded gti, had max of 23k to spend, i didnt like the idea of maxing my limited buying a basic spec ed 30, thats why im gonna wait for a years depreciation and see what the residuals will be . im not paying 29k for a an edition 30 with same spec as ive bought, thats simply not worth it at THAT PRICE, if i were i would be in an audi a3 which is a better car

By that he means the second generation R32

i.e. Mk4 Golf R32 = Mk (or generation) 1
      Mk5 Golf R32 = Mk (or generation) 2 (current)

Good review me thinks,

I agree excellent review. I'm not sure about the 18" alloy comments. I have driven two GTI's with 18" alloys around town in Sheffield and had no such worries. Sheffield roads are terribly pock marked and if there's one place to test a GTI on 18" alloys it is definitely Sheffield.

Which side of Sheffield are you on Hurdy? I used to love my drive to Matlock every day in my MK II GTI. Broomhill to Matlock. Great to go against the flow of traffic coming into the city.

Mind you got totally feed up with the traffic in the city in the end and moved out.
