Title: Fitting Boot Spoiler
Post by: wilson on 07 February 2007, 10:43
Hello all, my 16v has had the boot replaced at some stage and doesn't have a rear spoiler.  the spoilers have three bolts, how do I fit a new one?

Can I just drill three holes?   or is the GTI boot actually different?

Thanks
Wilson

You can't drill toughend glass, it will shatter. To fit the spoiler properly, find a rear screen from a GTI and swap it over.
The other option is to rip the studs out and bond the spoiler to the glass somehow...

Oh dear, I didn't realise they were fitted through the glass !!!

Might just leave it off, unless a screen appears nearby !

Thanks for advise.

or else find a mk2 golf votex rear spoiler which follows the same lines as GTi but fixes using the rear window seal

i picked one up of german ebay last year, needs sprayed satin black, but has all the fitting clips etc which is the important part

even comes with little glass plugs to allow u to fit to a GTI screen

i ended up having to pay about £40 all in inc postage from germany for it

never got round to fitting it either - might do it this summer though

look like this:-

votex spoiler is slightly larger & more pronounced than the std GTI spoiler. u can see differences here

votex:-

I want 100% standard,  I've got one that I bought on ebay, I might see if I can find anything that will bond it on cleanly securely, any suggestions? there must be people that have fitted a spoiler to non Gti's?

or there is this on ebay

The guy said he would send it wrapped in bubble wrap at my risk !!

just do it properly and swap the rear screen. It isn't hard, push the old one out and pop in the new one, its fiddly but doable in an hour or 2 depending how fast you work.

we all have to start somewhere
£25 is a little steep for a rear screen though, I sell em for £10.  Another thing to check is if your car has green tint glass or not, obviously you want the rear screen to match ;)
Look for a slight green tint on a pice of paper held up behind a window, and check for the word 'tinted' stamped on the glass near the part numbers.

Thanks for the advise I'll have a look.. I get the impression they might have been talking £25 for the whole boolid, but will check when I get there.

Where abouts are you?  is it something you could post...  suppose with post it'd come to around £25 anyway!
