Title: Rattle noise
Post by: markmarky0 on 07 February 2007, 10:11
Ever since ive had my 8 valve there has been a exhaust/tinny like rattle noise , when at hi revs it lowers and idle it increases. I have changed the manifold and exhaust to no joy.  Wondering if anyone else has had this before?

Hey Mark,

My '90 8v Gti had a corroded heat shield on the exhaust (protected the steering rack I think) that would rattle no end. Try the heat shields under the car as well in case they have loosened off.

good luck

I can see a heat shield round my exhaust and one which is cylindrical round the steering rack. The noise is def coming from the under the car at the front, near to the downpipe, i can put my ear under the car right next to it, but i still cant figure out what is causing this anoying noise

When its cold/colder check for movement or if it's loose.

Only other thing I can think of is, loose sound proofing in the exhaust boxes. My Scorpion SS back box had stuff floating around in it or if you have a Cat, material in the cat? :undecided:

I had this and changed the exhaust mount rubbers rings and it made no difference. Then I found out that the mount rubbers rings are specific to the Golf, ie, shaped differently. Changed them again and sorted. Check your rubbers!!!
