Are you on crack or what?!

An ISV is an Idle Stabilisation Valve, kepps yer tickover steady. Nothin interestin and only used on 2E engines

ISVs are used on loads of VW engines, MK2 8v & 16v, MK3 8v & 16v etc.

oic 'only the 2e has one, not the later MK3 2.0 8v engines'

Best way to clean an ISV, is leave it buzzing whils submerged in petrol or white spirit.  It buzzes with the ignition on ;)

This sounds highly dangerous!
A live connected devise suspended in petrol!!!
Can this be done outside the car?

Yes it can, it just needs a 12v feed to get it buzzing.
As long as you don't get any sparks you should be ok, do it in a well ventilated place and don't spill petrol everywhere

its the fumes that are dangerous, setting fire to a bucket of petrol isn't easy, but a garage full of fumes is a different matter ;)

Yes of course - I was just a little concerned that some numpty might try balancing a container of petrol or spirit somewhere in the engine compartment with a live ignition!
I have heard of people doing even dafter things!

its probably been adjusted to run without, by setting the idle a bit higher to make up for the lack of ISV.
