Title: Mk3 VR6: Draining gearbox oil
Post by: Mooby on 05 February 2007, 16:19
As the title says really...  How to?

All the manuals say how to top it up/check the level, but I can't find any info to find if there's a drain plug anywhere.

I'm gonna do an oil change soon (next week), I thought it might be nice to do the gearbox oil at the same time.  Is it possible, or would I have to remove the engine (or park on a steep bank ) to do it?  It changes ok, although it can sometimes be a bit unwilling to go into third, and have been known to grind it from time to time (lazy left foot syndrome ), so just think it might help it be a bit slicker.  if I can't then I'll check it and top it up, but would like to change it...

Oh, and anyone know off-hand what size spanner is required to undo the oil filter housing?  I've done it before (using molegrips) so I know it's something like 30mm.  I'l like to get a decent adjustable spanner that's big enough though, so I don't end up shredding the poor thing, but can't be arsed to jack it up to get under and measure it   Biggest spanner I saw last time I looked went up to about 35mm, and I want to be sure that's gonna be big enough before I buy one.

thanks

Thanks for the reply!

36mm?  Hmm, Think the largest I found was 35... damn.  Ah well, I'll have a better look at some point
