Title: mk1 16v ignition wiring.
Post by: mr ritz on 05 February 2007, 12:01
hi people,

i'm in the middle of fitting a kr 16v into my mk1 and i was just wondering if anybody could help.  i have ditched all the injection system in favour of twin 40 carbs and have a fair idea (i think!!!!) of the wiring for the ignition.

this is what i have so far?

if this is total rubbish please let me know as this is my first stab at a conversion!!

i'm unsure of which TCI unit i have to use?  would the unit from my 1.8 8v mk1 gti engine work? or is the 16v one required? if any body has the correct part numbers they would be gratefully recieved?

also would the ignition coil from my mk1 do the job or is a designated 16v coil required?

thanks in advance for all your ideas!!

you need the complete 16v FEI unit to go with that, otherwise you wont get any timing advance on the dizzy.  Basically, keep all the wiring thats connected to the FEI unit (otherwise known as the 'ECU', though technically it isn't).

TCI & coil are not 16v specific either :)

hi mate, thanks for the advice,  i was hoping to ditch the ecu totally due to advice found in the following document..

http://www.if-racing.co.uk/carb%20how%20to.htm (http://www.if-racing.co.uk/carb%20how%20to.htm)

this along with a wiring diagram from the polo they talk about arrived me at the drawing i have at the top of the screen??

i was half under the impression that the hall sensor on the side of the dizzy cap and the tci unit supplied the ignition advance?

much confusion??? :undecided:

Nope, the TCI & hall sender dont have any kind of ignition control built in. The ignition advance is handled by the FEI unit on the 16v, or the ECU on electronic injection cars.
If you want advance, you'll either have to run with the MK2 16v FEI unit, or fit a vacuum advance carb somehow!

Whats the problem with using the 16v FEI unit anyway, there's nothing to it!

Edit: Unless theres something special about an F reg polo setup I don't know about, besides the 16v FEI unit will have a much better ignition advance map for a 16v engine than the one from a F reg Polo ;)

again, thanks.

av been lookin into it a bit more,  to be honest i thought the FEI unit was gonna be a pig to sort out but according to mr haynes it seems alot more straight forward!!

probably would have done that from the start but it was just that article that seemed to make it sound even easier by just removing it?

should have realised that if theres an easy way to do summit then its generally wrong?!!!

Yeah, like I say unless theres summat special about the MK2 polo ignition setup, it wont work.  Perhaps the MK2 polo has an ignition system similar to a MK2 16v?  But then if so, there isn't any point in not using the 16v system
