hi golf nuts
my sister-in-law owns a j reg polo gt and it seems to have a slight running problem.
a little while ago i serviced it for her changing the spark plugs, oil and filter, fuel filter and air filter which i don't think has anything to do with the problem but thought someone else might see a link.
also when i first got the car before selling it to her i changed the dizzie cap and rotor arm too.
fairly recently she said he has been misfiring and chugging a little bit and hasn't been running very well at all and it was worse when she had any ancillaries running and when it was wetshe also complained she could smell petrol when she first starts it up.
when i did the service on it i changed the fan belt and noticed at the time that the alternator casing was cracked quite badly in three places so i put the running problem down to this so i changed it for a new unit but it didn't make any difference.
i then started to investigate deeper and found the spark plugs supplied to me when doing the sevice were wrong so i put the correct ones in and it seemed a bit better.
she confirmed that it had made a huge difference but then one day when we were having all the storms it was terrential rain and the car had a bit of a bunny hopping episode on the way home.
the thing is it's had a new dizzie cap, new plugs so all i can think is that the ht leads are breaking down when it's wet but just wondered if anyone had any other thoughts or knew of any common faults on these cars.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
kris

run the engine at night and watch the leads, if you see them arcing to the head you'll know they're shafted! Worth spraying a fine mist of water over the engine, to see if theres anything in particular that makes it run like arse.
