Title: Engine problems
Post by: gc350 on 04 February 2007, 00:06
Well not sure where to start but i'll try at the begining,  i have a few engine problems which may or may not be linked, and am desperately after some advice before it all goes pear shaped.

I have a C-reg 1.8 gti 8v Kjet

Firstly  When i get in the car and start the ignition the car idles fine, after a few minutes of driving the revs increase to just under 2K and the tick over stays raised, this only drops after a few stops and starts, if i continue to drive without stopping the revs stay very high.

Next problem, when the car gets hot (fan cuts in ok)usually after being stuck in traffic if i stop the engine, I can start  it back up, but when i go to pull away it just stalls, i have to try and catch the throttle exactly as the engines fires up, and give it a load of revs to clear it.

Finnally the car is pinking like an absolute b!tch when under any load.

I NEED HELP PLEASE I have no idea where to start.

1. Do a search for 'hunting idle' and 'idle problems' I'm sure you will find some stuff worth checking out. ISV, vacuum lines etc..

2. It would be worth changing the engine 'blue' temp sensor. I am not sure where it is on the kjet.

3. Sounds like it needs the timing etc setting up properly.

Hope this gets you started.

I thought the k-jet, being mechanical injection, wouldn't have something like a coolant temp sensor? Isn't that an EFI only sensor?

You may be right!

Either way it will have some sort of mechanism for controlling the autochoke on cold starts and it's that that needs looking at.

There is lots of useful info in the ChildBoard at the top of the normal Mk2 board.

Like this Rubjonny Digifant set up guide - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33253.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33253.0)

1. no isv
2. no blue sender
3. Yep I'd say the timing, and check the idle switch :)
Timing is easy on a k-jet, line up all the marks as per my FAQ post, then to set the ignition timing:
1. Switch your main beams on
2. Disconnect & plug the breather on the cam cover (throttle body side)
3. Set the idle to 900-1000rpm
4. Switch off engine, turn off the lights, plug breather back in
5. Disconnect & plug the dizzy vacuum connection
6. Set ignition timing to 6 degrees BTDC at idle :)

The WUR & 5th injector are controlled by the coolant tremp sender in the flange on the front of the head I believe, try unplugging both to see if that helps with the cold start issue.

Well I work in IT, so I'm sat in front of the computer all day long, browsing forums when I should be working.
I've taught myself everything I know from reading forums, lookin at the haynes/bentley manuals and speaking to more knowledgable people :)

Car history:
MK2 1989 1.6 Driver (Still miss this car, if only it was a 3 door and I'd still own it!)
MK2 1990 1.8 GTI (my current ride)
MK1 1983 Cabrio (engineless ATM, but wont be for much longer!)

My girlfriend has a MK3 1991 Polo
