Title: 1.9 conversion
Post by: DarnPB on 02 February 2007, 13:25
looks like I have an engine rebuild on my hands for the summer, so I am thinking about increasing the capacity to 1.9. Is this just a simple task of opening up the bores or does the ECU/injection system need modifying too? What kind of power increase can I expect if all I do is open up the bores?
I intend to do a little more obviously, like gas flow the head and manifolds, and perhaps fit a mildly silly cam, but ball park figures from people who have done this!
Regards.

it all depends on a gfew things like the engine you are starting with for example, if your using a pb or similar 8v engine which i'm guessing you are you may as well fine a 2e bottom end and whack your head on that the you're at 2.0 without much work at all

I would love to do that, but that kind of behaviour is not tolerated in Spain, (I live 'ere) and the car would not go through the ITV (MOT). Have to stick to the PB engine I'm afraid. Bummer.

you'd have to look pretty hard to spot it, even harder if you ground of the engine code
seems like the cheapest answer but hey i'm not spanish

Neither am I, just live here. Thats what you get for having a Spanish wife!!
If it's hard to decifer the codes, it might be worth looking into. I'll have to do a little homework but the car would be next to worthless if it was spotted with a different engine than it was hormoligated with.
I'm alowed to repair the original engine or replace it with another identical. I can also chip the ECU and modify the engine, ie increase the capacity, change the cam etc. But I can't remove the injection system for a carb conversion, or do an engine swap for a 16v, VR6, G60 etc. Hence the reason for repairing it and doing something to it at the same time.

Go down to your local unfriendly ITV centre and see maybe a replacement engine of 2l is not too much of a change, I have heard the ITV is quite harsh a bit like the German version. 1.9 is doable I think TSR have a few parts to do that conversion.

i have put a 2.0 bottom end on my 90 8v gti and the only difference i can see is an extra breather on the front of the block and a 2.0 on the back it is also a newer engine and a lot cheaper than a rebuild hope this helps
