Title: flashing lights on Instument Cluster
Post by: mk28vfreak on 23 January 2004, 09:21
Hi Guys and Gals,

Can anyone tell me what the Dashboard Led's represent.  the main one i am interested in is the one in the middle of the top row.  i think it is something to do with coolant temperature but i am not sure.  It seems to flash at me every now and again and at the same time the rev counter goes haywire shooting up and down the gauge.

any ideas anyone???

TIA

yeah it is the coolant sensor, it flashes when the water level is low

bit weird the way the rev counter goes haywire also, that sounds a bit more like an electrical fault

Ok when your lights are on and the dimmer wheel below the light switch is on full, wait until the coolent light starts to flash then press the dimmer switch quit hard.  You will notice your dash lights will go out & the coolent light will stop flashing, let go & it starts flashing again :(

(this only used to happen when the car was warm) & prob the switch got warmer

plus when the headlight switch is on full & put a bit of pressure on it & you mite find the headlights dim down to half beam

KNACKERED HEADLIGHT SWITCH ;D

could be the temperature sender (blue one) is not working properly, this can affect idling. they are about 12 quid for a new one from vag. good starting point

in front of the cylinder head, just to the right of the alternator. one is black and one is blue (should be) they are in a union for some water pipes and they have wires coming out of them. the one closest to the head is the temperature sender (blue one)

i hope this makes sense!
