if its turned to mush like my old one did then yes, it blocks the hole and then the coolant cant get thru properly or not at all, which messes up the choke i think? or something like that, its easy enuf to change but a massive pain to get the manifold off , looky here http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33259.0

yeah if its blocked up the autochoke will stick on, you'll use loads of fuel, loose performance and your engine will coke up inside :)
