Hi guys
I've found a 1997 MK3 16v GTI, 3 door, in Mystic Blue.
It has FVWSH and is in immaculate unmodified condition.
The MOT runs out at the end of April and the tax at the end of May.
The car has done 86k and I've been able to knock him down to £2,400 (he originally wanted £3k) but that's as far as he will go.
It was registered in Northern Ireland, so it has one of those random AAANNNN number plates.
What do you reckon on the value - rip off or acceptable?
Cheers

i paid £1200 last year for my 97 5 door 16v.....it had fsh mostly dealer, 9 months mot, no tax, 121k...but just had a engine rebuild due to cambelt faliure so that sold it for me ...tell him you will give him £2100 cash...
-
That N I plate is a turn off.
Great colour but it still aint worth £2400.
Another dealer I assume. tell him to put it on ebay and see what he gets!
-
I think any dealer is trying to get more than the car's worth as a matter of course. Private sellers TEND to price cars more realistically.
The fact that the tax and MOT runs out soon is an issue aswell.
See if he'll put 12 months tax and MOT on it. Try and knock him down some more but if he's not having it i'd walk away.
At the end of the day mate you're the one forking out so if you think it's worth it go for it.
-
Thanks for your thoughts guys.
This car is not with a dealer - it's a private seller.
Interestingly, the N plate 16v that I saw at the beginning of the week for £2,300 (without the f***ing alarm) is now on ebay and that's already going for £2k and it's not a patch on the car that I've seen today.
I'll try my damnedest to get him lower......
Do you reckon that the N I plate will have an impact on resale value?
-
Oh yes!
TBH even though I keep saying the price is high I am doing myself a disservice as mine goes down as well.
-
I paid £2400 for my 97 P-reg, standard MK3 16V with aircon, FVWSH, 12months MOT, no tax tho, and only 33k miles on clock, that was over a year ago and from main dealer, although I got it at trade price.
I'd expect you should be able to knock yours down another couple of hundred, mainly because of age of car.
-
I'll certainly have a good go at knocking him down.
I've been looking at the values on the parkers website and they're quite a lot different than what this guys asking for!
The car has aircon as well.

Sounds goodish, maybe book it in to have it checked out with a vagcom report too
If its a good one after that and you want it, wave what you think its worth in his face (cash)
Less any repairs/issues the check found.
Mystic Blue is a wicked colour
All the best m8

Hi bsting
Thanks for the advice - I'm glad that you weren't suggesting waving anything else in his face.
I love the colour too and the fact that there's not any of them about is brilliant.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Cheers

mine is also mystic blue...apart from black probably the best colours in the mk3 range.
-
Nice one  m8
When the sun gets low it sorta changes from a dark met blue to a purple...rather trippy imo
Some other mk3s i like out there...
satin silver
hot chilli red
dragon green
twilight violet
storm grey
Not a big fan of black cars tbh. Hard to keep clean and a oven in summer (even with ac on)
We do get hot summers in nz.
Lee and others, there is a wee trick on some mk3s (if you dont know) put the key in the drivers door (like you were going to unlock it) give it a half turn and hold the key in that position. The windows should drop, do the reverse of that and they will go up.
If the car has the sunroof open this will close as well.

Sounds a nice motor mate BUT dont let your heart take over, even if its immaculate there should be something you can pull !
As earlier posts said try to get money off for the MOT. When is it due a service ? thats £200 from a VW dealer straight away.
If he wont budge walk off you WILL find another just as good as there are loads out there.
I paid 1200 (he wanted 1800) for my R reg 8V less than 6 months ago and all that needed was a service / timing belt changing (both done for £200). 3dr magic black, aircon, full VW SH, 12 month MOT, 6 month tax.
The car is worth 1900 tops as Parkers will no doubt tell you.

I got an immaculate 90K mile 1997 VR6 for 2200 less than a month ago...

Thanks - you've given me some more to think about.
Randomly, I stumbled across the Parkers website last night.
Looks like I'm going to need to negotiate quite aggresively!

If you want details of exactly what he will have paid for it and how much he will try to retail it for, let me know :)
-
hey,
Having worked in the motor industry for years I'll tell you now that nobody will take any notice of parkers guide or any other price guide for that matter, I know it's a private sale but pay what you think the cars worth and if it's mint expect to pay a bit more. I've got exactly the same car and if somebody tried to offer me parkers pricing I'd be insulted. Sayin that tho if the guy who's selling it isn't into has (or her) dubs then you might pick up a bargain.
hope it goes well, mystic blue looks awesome in the summer sun!

Bit steep IMO, buy a VR6, 16v's aren't much quicker than an 8v, 8v's are slow as p!ss, i took one on a run today, 1st time i've drove a mk3 8v for ages, n my mk2 is faster with a slipping clutch...
also 16v's are only 1 group less than a VR on insurance and probably not much better on fuel either.....

Just for the record, 16v IS much quicker than an 8v, not much slower than a VR6 with a few choice mods.
I'm not quite sure how you think a 2.0 16v 4 pot has same fuel consumption as a 2.8 VR6!!
Do you drive a VR by any chance?
-
i've had a couple of 8's & 16v's and a few VR's mate, so i'm talking from experience 8v's and 16v's are pants, VR all the time, as for fuel consumption ya don't need to boot a VR like ya do a 4pot, so therefore balancing fuel economy out pretty much.....

Hey rgibo
Your advice is appreciated! I've been looking around and I must admit that I haven't any decent golfs that come anywhere near the book price.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Cheers
