Title: Hello Everyone-new Mk2 owner

Greeting everyone. Just paid £360 for a black 1985 Mk2 GTI, years MOT needs a bit of tidying and has a few running probs (lumpy idle and no power-ideas?) but generally in great nick for the year and miles (178k). Haven't owned a VW for a few years but have had a Derby, Mk1 Golf, 2x Mk2 Scirocco. Looking forward to getting the new one running well and having fun again!

The lumpy idle could be due to the ICV being a bit dirty in which case it needs a gd clean out in some petrol for 24hrs. The loss of power could be a few things: Timing  belt a toth out etc might be better if you explained more  :smiley:

Thanks, I haven't had a chance to investigate yet, the car has been standing for some time so it might just need a decent service to cure the problem. The guy I bought it from said he thought the fuel tank needed draining and the fuel filter changing to cure the problem. I put in £20 of petrol and drove it home last night and it's slow off the mark and tops out with a bit of a struggle at 60-70mph. If you floor it in any gear it doesn't get past 4k rpm then kind of flutters like it's being held back by something. I'll give it a going over at the weekend and see what happens.

Thanks everyone, still haven't got the car sorted-just haven't had the time or the weather!
I've just been looking out the window at the car and I've noticed the wipers are the other way round to all the other cars around it and it doesn't have a blanking plate. The wiper hubs are in the centre and on the passenger side-wierd! I wonder if the car was imported as a lhd and converted (having said that why isn't there a blanking plate on the drivers side?)-anyone else's like this?
