Hi all :)
Im in too minds about what car to go with next, need some advice :D
I have a Big Bumper Mk2 Golf Gti currently an 8v. Now i would like to do an engine conversion in the
next few months to either a 2.0 16v ABF lump or a G60 engine. I really do love my golf and have coilovers
and 8" BBS Rms ready to go on.
But recently my brother bought Corrado Vr6 and its flipping amazing. Power, look, handling all are so much
better than my currently standard Mk2. Ive looked into Vr6s and there too expensive for a nice one so i was
thinking about getting a G60 one. It would be slightly tuned if i had one to around 180-200 bhp :)
Question is' What would be more fun? A Mk2 Golf Gti with The engines mentioned above? Or a Corrado with that engine in already?

Personally I prefer the Golf, but remember the running costs are going to be alot higher than with your current 8v.
Think Fuel, Insurance, and with the G60 possible charger overhaul.

I'm currently getting just over 22 mpg out of my Rallye. :shocked: I'm p1ssed off with going to shell for V-Power at the moment. :cry: It's not normally what I drive every day and I'm not sure I ever could do with the running costs.

ok, i have a mk2 8v which is pretty well tuned. i do alot of work with a guy who tunes vw's and at one point used to specialise in g60's. as a result i've driven ALOT of customers cars, the majority of which were corrado's. i have driven some sheds as well as some mint examples and to be honest i have only been really impressed by one, maybe two corrado's. this is probably because although they are newer than a mk2 golf they are still old cars and they weigh significantly more than a mk2 as well.
not really sure what i'm trying to say here :P just that there are alot of cheap corrado's out there but there are alot of sheds too. if you like mk2's its worth spending wisely in the right areas to get the best out of your current car. if you want a corrado save up and buy a really good one! also bodywork on corrados is more expensive so look for a decent shell, rather than decent engine. ultimately in these cars engines work out cheaper to fix than the shell.

keep the mk2 golf. nothing turns heads more than a mint mk2 :cool:

I went through a dilema simular to yours a few months ago.
I was going to sell my pretty much standard 16v golf mk2 and look for corrado g60,
i had insurance quotes to change my policy, which turned out only to cost an extra £30 or £40 quid more to insure the corrado!
But then decided in the end to start putting a bit of money and (...joes) time into my golf instead and have never looked back! Corrado's are awesome but seriously expensive when things start going wrong! One of my close friends had a G60 for 5 or so years and i watched him throw serious money at it all the time. Just check out how much a genuine front light costs, or indeed a charger re-build...

I would be tempted to go for the Corrado to be honest, but would have to be a nice example in a decent colour, i.e not white and prob not red either.

Hello mate sounds like your after some big BHP but have you considered chucking some cash at the block thats in your motor already ie cams, differant bottom end etc. You will never get major Bhp but a nice quick and all in all cheap car..... :smiley:

If you're current shell is mint, keep it and swap the engine.
Changing to a 2.0 16v lump will give you a performance boost and will be cheaper than a 1.8T conversion, and you won't have to worry about Charger rebuilds on a G60.
A 2.0 16v engine can be modded to give 170bhp fairly easily which is the same bhp as the 2.8 VR6.
Stick to the Mk2, it's also a more practical car, as leg room in the back of a corrado isn't great for adults.

I do like my golf and it does go well for what it is! Ive never thought about tuning an 8v as i
thought it was pretty expensive!
Ive got a good mechanical knowledge but when it comes to 'upgrading' the engine i struggle to see
how the engine power increases lol.
Would say, a 2.0L Bottom end, Gas Flowed Head, New Cam, Remap and full S/S System inc manfold work
out cheaper than say buying a 2.0 16v engine which i would want a full S/S System straight away on.
Whats the 2.0L bottom end from if you dont mind me asking? a Mk3 Golf engine?

If you done all that to the 2ltr 8v then it would probably struggle to give a similar power output to a standard 2ltr 16v tbh.
The 8v route would be easier for you seeing as that's what youre car is but if you want something you can upgrade later on for a bit more power then go for the 16v. You will struggle to see 170bhp out of an 8v and have it as a useable daily driver, whereas a 16v will produce that as standard if it's a good engine.

I'd go for the Corrado, but i may have become slightly slightly biased recently! :grin:
I Corrado's are awesome but seriously expensive when things start going wrong!

Keep the Golf and buy a Raddo :wink: - Seriously I have... (well got he the missus to buy a Corrado G60 :rolleyes:)and would still struggle to part with my valver!

If you were going to buy a Corrado, then make it a VR - you wont' be dissapointed!

I agree with Lewy, go for a rado VR6.
I changed from my 16v to a rado VR6 and I'm loving it. It is more refined and definately a lot more relaxing drive... you should convince ur bro to give you a go ;) The VR roar will have you hooked.
In defense of the Golf, I still love them because they are so much fun to drive, you can fling at anything.
