Ello,
How low can you go whilst on 18s without loosing too much ride comfort or handability? Just curious and anyone got any reccomendations on what to drop front n rear? ? :nerd:
Thanks,
-
Alot depends the car, the tyre profile and the wheel offset .... any more info ?!
-
ummm well im yet to buy rims..i want the tyre wrapped round the rims though so quite low profile.. ermm its a mk4 1.6 16v SE golf
5 100
not sure bout offset.. :undecided:

My Mk4 Anniversary had 18x8 BBS RC's on it, with 225/40/18 tyres and was 35mm lower than a std GTI. I personally wouldn't go with a 40 profile tyre if you want a 'bit' of ride comfort as they are like rubber bands and with a small sidewall the flex is minimal, hence the great handling aspect.
Have you heard of the Koni/Eibach shock and spring combination? Eibach do a 55mm drop spring called the 'sportline', matched with a decent shock absorber like the Koni, you should have a mixture of good handling and ride comfort.
Like most things in the modifying world, you have to make sacrifices in order to reach your goal, what that sacrifice is you have to decide.

yeah i see what your saying about the sacrafice thing..
What about the spring/shock combo thing.. i think ive heard Of it.. but dont know anything about it..any info?
Will it cost more or less than a coilover kit do you know roughly? (coilover kits about 300?) obviously i would like to spend as little as possible with the suspension, but still have fairly good quality (not dangerous) so i can put more money towards rims, id like to go no smaller than 18's really.
Thnaks for your help so far mate! :nerd:

If you saw a brand new set of coilovers for £300, then I'm sorry to say but they would be crap!! If they are the sets off of ebay, or even the Jamex kits they are only height adjustable, with sh1t springs that give you same ride quality as the pedal go-kart you had as a kid, i.e, NONE!
Take a look on www.motorsportworld.co.uk (http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk) this should give you an idea of how much it would cost for the Koni/Eibach kit, or even if you can save a few more pennies go for a set of coilovers which are from a reputable firm.
Also have a gander on www.uk-mkivs.net (http://www.uk-mkivs.net) in the classifieds and the suspension forum, someone might be selling a bargain.
Also to note, if you go too far on the drop, you'll need to replace the front anti-roll bar links as the bar hits the driveshaft anything over 60mm, alternatively FK do a replacement roll bar for about £100.

Ah.. they were the ones from egay! lol and thanks for the warning!
I had a quick look on the motorsport site and found various things.. not too sure whats what though.. sounds a lil stupid i know but new to it all.. lol. most things said they were for drops bout 30-35mm?? thats not much though? im thinking about 50mm??
when u say the eibach(sp)/Koni do you mean either of the two are good or a combo of the both?
If you have a chance could you please link me to the page that has stuff for dropping about 50mm?? Feel stupid asking but wanna try learn whats what. :nerd:
Thanks!
-Incase you need to know(car is a golf mk4 1.6 16v) and would like to put on 18s!
Thanks again mate.

No worries matey, everyone learns something new every day.
I can't link the pages as they're not independantly linked, but have a look at the 'Sportline' springs by Eibach, and the Koni shocks, they are the 'shortened' range. The Koni's are listed as 30mm rebound, but will handle the 50mm drop a treat.

Great! thanks mate.
Just had a lil look on there and for a set of Eibach sport line springs, front and rear koni shortened shocks im looking at about £350.00 thats including 10quid for each sets of shocks and another 9quid for the springs in postage so p+P will be 29quid but they may do a free delivery thing over certain price but i dont know! So yeah this optin would be better i think! 50mm looks good in my opinion, and if its sitting on 18" rims should look even better..
God my car is going to cost me every penny!!! will be a little project anyway..getting the money together for rims and suspension!! i want a set of bk299s in chrome! there about 900 so im looking at about 1300 to get whole lot! jeeesus lol well worth it though!!
Thanks for ya help!!
Anything else i should know??
-
Scott, the postage would be about £10 as thats how they work it out. If you do a 'false' purchase it'll automatically work out the postage.
This is 18x7.5 RC's with a 35mm drop

So you can just imagine what another 15/20mm will do. It will look as sweet as.
What size rims are you going for? Only asking as my Mk4 had quite a gap from the edge of the tyre to the arch.

I did contemplate spacers, but now that it's sold, I don't care what it looks like!!
