Title: my mk2 just not starting at all, please help
Post by: DazT on 29 January 2007, 11:11
golf mk2 1.8 8v GL 1990
hi iv had loads of problems over the past 8months but got everything sorted (new gearbox, clutch, suspension all round and loads more), then about a month ago the cars battery light kept on going off and prettymuch stalling, so i baught a new battery it worked fine then when reversing in a car park it just totally went dead so i took it to the garage and one of the water pipes had burnt and it was losing water ,soo they fixed it and fixed somthing that was under my massive airbox(sorry im just a newbie)...... i then used the car fine and it kept on running jerkish now and again and then it just stopped and will not start up again, iv left it for about 3weeks as i cant afford to fix it anymore. i got the battery charged and started it up, took a good few times and then started for about 2 mins and then just cut out. i try turning the key now and the lights pop up red as usual but nothing else at all, no noise from the engine or anything....
please help if u can, if i cant fix it, its just going the scrap yard .

Have you checked the earth straps found under the bonnet???

I've not had the problem myself but from what you describe (can someone back me up / correct me if I'm wrong?!) it sounds like a flakey earth ...

^ As above, check all your earths and make sure that there fixed to solid shiny metal and that there are no breaks in any of the straps, It mite be worth taking any earth straps off and giving the area a good wire brush then clean the end of the wire itself and screw it back down.
