Could do with some help please! My golf died on me the other day when braking, then i noticed a tapping sound from the front of the car, started it back up & got loads of white smoke out the back, (& i mean loads! enough to make the road vanish!), you could smell the antifreeze fumes etc, im no mechanic, but does that sound like ive blown the headgasket? Thanks in advance!
Its an 8 vavle, the car has done about 160k, had been running sweet up till now. Any help is appreciated!

Take off the oil cap and check to see if you have a creamy white mixture, good sign that the gasket is away, also check water levels, you may have a cracked or pershied water pipe, have you lost any performance??
-
yes id have a creamy white mixture under the oil cap, not loads but there is some, all the water has gone, which was topped up a few days before this happened, yeah ive lost performace too..... not looking good!

With what you have said, your head gasket has gone. Set youself up with a good weekend and take the head off. Carefully inspect the head and see if anything untoward caused it, like a crack.
Don't forget to change the oil!

Thanks man, ive got a guy doing it tomorrow for me as a homer, i dont know enough to tackle this myself, how much would you expect to pay someone for the work? Ive got the new gasket, oil & coolant.

If its a good M8 24 cans of his favourite beer and £35.00, if not you expect £20.00 an hour and a minimum labour charge of 4 hours
-
 thats cool, yeah he said it would be about 3-4 hours to do it, ahh the joys of motoring!
-
Sweet if U have any spare time U should stick with him, it's amazing how much U will pick up and always worthwhile as experience is everything, note be prepared to skin some knuckles LOL

How many mechanics charge £20 an hour?

Why not have the cambelt replaced while having the head gasket done? The belt only costs a couple of quid and it has to come off to replace the head gasket anyway.
-
yeah mate, he did mention that to me, hopefully getting a new belt on it this weekend, i also need to replace the first injector too, i'm constantly on the road with work & just had to get the car back running again for the next few days  So hopefully i'll get it changed!

If your going to all this bother replace the timing belt tensioner and the other 3 injectors, the guru Rubjohnny has sourced alternative merc injectors for a few squid each, save u hassle in the long run and maybe save a couple of MPG

Yeah, the merc injectors only fit 16v's though don't they? Thought they were for k-jet systems...
BTW, you say you're having the belt changed this weekend? Why didn't you get it done while he had the head (and more importantly, the belt) off doing your gasket?
-
it was repaired at night time & couldn't get a belt till the next day, but i had to be back motoring by then, a catch 22! Its a mate doing the belt for me for cheapness & i get all my parts very cheap to as my brother in law owns a motor factors, its jut getting some time or a spare car to jump about in!
