you don't stricktly need it - ust makes the job a little less fiddly...
as long as you take the tension of the springs with your spring compressors, you will be able to take the nut off with some long nose pliers or simliar!
give it a go!
-
I want to be able to do it back up tight :)
-
the same goes...
tension spring back up, spin the nut down the thread, tighten up with thin nose pliers/molegrips.
once the full tension of the springs has been released that nut is going nowhere!
I have the tool, but it is not 100% great, takes effort/patience to keep it on top of the nut!

i'm sorted now thanks lads. I ended up making my own in the end. Even though in too soft an ali it made the fitting a million times quicker. I'll still buy a proper one to get it really tight. I actually ordered one from amazon this week but had hassle with my card, and expected a locat motor factors to have them in stock..i was wrong :)

You can also use a mallet and punch if you are careful- have managed that successfully. Lots off little taps will get it there eventually.

Just had to replace both dampers on my car, managed to make a tool out of a length of ally pipe. Worked a treat
