Hi guys, i just picked one of these up off ebay a few weeks ago..its one those spoilers of the vr6 and gti...small bit of black plastic really. I have a golf mk3 TDI
The spoiler still had three screws in it which were obviously used to attach it on to the vr6/gti.
Ive successfully managed to scrape all the old glue off it, so its pretty smooth...im then gonna paint it green the colour of my car (with a spray can?!)
The breaker on ebay who i bought it from said i should remove the screws (think i have to get them sawn off) and then glue it on.
I found a mk3 tdi down the road from me and he seems to have done this as i dont think spoiler came as an option for the tdi back in the 90s
Im pretty crap at DIY and dont want to mess this up. What type of glue do I need? Is glue strong enough? Any advice for applying the glue? The guy mentioned 'mastic glue' but some other randomer said dont use that, you PU glue...dont know what either of them are
any Advice welcome and cant get search function to work. Sure this has been discussed before!

im guessing the tdi rear glass does not have the holes in the rear screen like the gti's do then? so using the screws and bolting it through the glass isnt an option? :huh:
if that is the case, then as has been said, saw / dremmel them off and get it all as smooth as possible.
the best stuff ive found for spoilers (apart from screwing them through the glass / bodywork of course!) is tiger seal, have used it on side skirts before and its worked fine.....

thats the sort of stuff, you usually need a skeleton gun to apply it and want the surfaces as smooth as possible, but that should be fine.
just make sure u wipe the excess off while its still wet, gettin it off bodywork / glass when its dried is an absolute mission.

when I fitted my spoiler to my old car I used araldite epoxy at 3 points to bond onto the metal part of the tailgate, and then I used transparent bathroom sealant to stop any leaks getting from top part to the glass.
this worked well without any probs, although it is pretty permanant so you can't remove without having to do any further paint work.

Mk3 driver's rear spoiler's are bonded on and not screwed through the glass..And last time i removed one it took an age!!!! Think they used tiger seal stuff or something very similar

Yup, I swear by it, keep some unmixed in my boot tool kit all the time :grin: :grin: only 10mins to set, rock hard within an hour, permanant in 24 hours.

Or should i be using the tiger stuff... or are they both as good?
I cant fit the spoiler at the moment cause i havent worked out how to get rid of the dam screws. Does any of the spoiler actually sit on the glass?
If so..do i apply any of the adhensive on the glass? or just on the metal area and the spoiler...
Any painting advice? Im assuming I can pick up the standard golf mk3 green colour in a spray can from somewhere..

araldites available from most DIY stores, inc homebase, buy the two tube type that you mix together.
could try tiger stuff, but i've no experience with that.
some of the spoile does sit on the glass, i.e. where the studs are. I used epoxy on metal region and silicone sealant on glass areas.
painting, make sure you have sufficient undercoat, possibly wet/dry the plastic to give a slghtly rough layer for paint to adhere to, preparation is everything. you can get VAG 2-pack paint from main dealer for about £12 I think, comes with a can of clear lacquer.

alright guys well after a trip to homebase i found myself a hacksaw, some sand paper and that araldites stuff. Its two containers connected together and when u squeese it the two substances merge. Quite advanced but the packet sounds like it knows what to do and should keep the spoiler on the car.
1 hour later...the screws were off! (slave labour..) and i sanded it down. Now its nice and smooth. Then i washed it in gin (what a waste..) cause it was the only alcoholic cleaner i could fine.
Next step...paint. Have to get to vw in the morning and get some green stuff.
3 questions so far;
Is the araldites applied in small amounts? Less is more...sort of thing?
Do i apply the silicone sealant and the araldites at the same time and then stick it to the car...and hope for the best?
Does wet/dry the plastic...mean wet it and then dry it?

hey mate,
wet and dry is a very fine sand paper which needs to be used when wet, I'd recommend reading up on this first before going ahead and spraying your spoiler otherwise you'll end up doing it again when it peels/cracks. the whole painting this will take a day for the usual DIY'er at home.
1. prep spoiler by cleaning and drying
2. wet and dry sand the plastic surface, 1000GRIT maybe (I'm no expert mind)
3. Put down a couple of plastic undercoats (20mins between coats)
3. 3-5coats of VW rattle can, take your time start and finish spraying off the actual spoiler. (20mins between coats, at least 1hour before lacquer, some would recommend a day)
4. a couple of coats of lacquer.
For the fixing of the spoiler, I put 3 5cmx5mm (longxwide) strips along the spoiler, the rest was filled in with silicone. hmm.. I have pictures of what I did some where.

Thank you so much. I spoke to a guy in halfords today and he explained what you said to me...so tomorrow at 9am im going to get the undercoat spray, dragon green spray, lacquer, and some wet and dry...and will do it throughout the day...hoping for good weather!
Im happy with the painting procedure now..
However attaching to the car...once its painted and dried...(sunday...) I..
a) put three strips of the adhensive on the spoiler
b) surround the rest of the spoiler in silicone...
c) stick it to the car...
d) then gaffa it up so it stays in place..

yup, that's pretty much it. I think on the underside of the spoiler it's not completely flat, i.e. when you rest it up against the tail gate, so you should put the silicone on all the bits that actually make contact.
The araldite will set hard after 20mins, so you'll have sometime for adjustment to get the spoiler sitting perfectly. Use the gaffer tape to hold it in place. After a few hours check its stuck firmly, within a day mine could take some pretty hard knocks, i.e. I could lift the back end up slightly by pushing up on the spoiler, but I wouln't push it too much, might end up ripping the paint off.

Ok...conclusion is
Dont paint something unless you know what you're doing. I really believed i was ontop of things..and applied 5 coats of grey primer, 4 coats of dragon green..and 3 coats of clear laquer
Doesn't look good though. It got chipped around the edges which i tired to solve using Halford's dragon green scratch/stone chip repair kit and looks even worse.
I don't really want to stick it to my car as the body work on my car doesnt have a single scratch thus...this bodge job will really stand out.
I think I need to take it to the pros...
Anyone know of a car painter in london? Any idea at how much it will cost? How long it will take? Do i have to provide the paint?
Any advice is welcome......

Doh... sorry to hear that, but I guess it's a learning process.
Can't recommend anyone off the top of my head but I'll ask my mate who works in Battersea tommorow as he deals with a bodyshop all the time. He helped me get my front grill sprayed for £25, booked it in for a week, but only takes about a day to do. No need to supply paint or do any prep, just tell them the colour code.
In your case though, they might want to strip it back to bare plastic.

Guy was really nice though and said to me its just not worth it and he doesnt want to do it because he knows its a rip off...but it would take the same paint to do it as if he was doing for example, a front wing...

sorry to hear about the mess up... won't it be ahrd to get a good finish on the spoiler as it isnt a smooth surface in the 1st place? matt
