Title: Bad effects of using underpowered battery
Post by: T_J_G on 25 January 2007, 15:57
Right, went to my car to embark upon a 50 mile round trip and car would not start. Battery dead. would hardly power anything.

So I go and buy a new battery and when I return (£70 lighter) the battery's are different. Upon measuring up the old battery was a 063 and my new one was 065. So i relpaced it and it starts on the spot now instead of trying to make it's mind up.

Just wondering because it's had the battery since alast April (prev. owner) could there have been any bad effects on the electrical system having run an underpowered battery for 7 months.

The prev one was 380 amps the new one is 500-odd I think.

Having an underpowered battery won't have any ill effect's on your car...The amp's your reading is cold crank power and the lower this the less starting power you have..... When I worked for exide we all way's said for golf's 063 upto 1600cc and 065 above exept diesel's.. I had an 063 on my 1800 driver for over 1 year and she started first time every time. £70 for an 065 is a bit steep tho...

The only part of your car that could have suffered would be the alternator, it might need to work harder to keep the battery charged  :undecided: but unless you're driving around with your lights on full beam, blowers going, wipers etc... & a loud stereo all at once its unlikely

Normally have the blowers on and the CD player. So i should be ok...

The battery was an Exide 065TE 4 year gaurantee(from Motorworld) has a little light on it to show it's status, and apparently has more starting power than the one i could of got £13 cheaper but I thought hey may aswell get the better one. the other onew only had 3 year gaurantee.

We had to get it in there as it was the only place in that town to get one in stock, Dad had to rush to work.

All sorted now though.

I didn't have time to, my Dad had to be in work 1 hour after I got the battery it was either that or walk to work and sod that....

In the end I didn't end up paying for it, so it's alright...if I wasn't in a hurry i'd have drove up GSF.
