I've found a really good offer on a MK2 1.6 "ryder" but I'm not sure what the difference is between that n a driver?
I heard it's just what took over from the 1.3 but I just wanted to be sure...
-
think its just a trim/spec thing. Would have come with a certain type interior, bumpers etc. I cant tell you exactly what but thats all it will be.
-
just a cl with a sunroof
-
Ah right cheers guys, just phoned up the guy and it doesn't have power steering so I won't be getting it anyway  only had 63,000 on the clock, was 1991! just gota wait for another to pop up i guess...
-
you can put power steering on them? not worth turning down really... and the steering aint that bad on them :)
-
How much would it cost to put power steering on it? and would that effect insurance much?
-
wont effect insurance. and its not a massive job but you need to be competant. the hardest bit is finding the parts second hand. i like my golfs without power steering persnally as i like the heavy feel at high speeds
-
Yea, I just phoned a garage and they said it would cost 1200 for the parts alone lol, what models of the mk2 have power steering then? Just so I know what to keep my eye open for
-
think it was an optional extra on most mk2's.
-
hans right mate, im on a 1300 ryder.. but its more enjoyable with the heavyness, feels like youre more i contact with the road, comapred to new clio i learnt in, eurrrgh.
61 k aitn abd at all, id have had that! mines got 105, but an angine thats done below 80 now.. and i loves it
-
hmm fairplay, do you think it would be quite hard to find a 1.6 with power steering?
And is it just me, or do like 80% of 1.6 mk2s have automatic transmition??! lol
-
yes, it will be very hard to find a mk2 1.6 with power steering. In fact, il start searchin for the needle i dropped in that haystack and i recon il find it before you get one.
-
Haha alrite smarty pants, I get the picture :p
-
Difference is the trim level only, ryder will have no arches but the driver will have all the GTI small bumper arch trims, different seats etc :)
You can get 1.6 motors with PAS, it was always an option its just a case of being patient. Fitting PAS isn't too hard, in fact I would go far as to say its easier on a carb based MK2 than a GTI since the manifold & downpipe split so easily so it makes pulling the engine out a breeze.
mattneck, as I was saying to you earlier, MK2 PAS is great, you only notice it when parking. Its not light like on these toy cars the French make
-
our resident fountain of vw knowledge there with the facts. im quarter of the way through that haystack by the way, hope your havin more luck with the golf!
-
Haha fraid not mate, i'm just gona sit back n play the waiting game. ask me how I'm doin next year lol.
So do you only really notice the PAS when parking?
-
Hmm, I find my PAS heavy when at low speeds manoevring, but lighter once driving - is this normal?

RubJ is right....PAS is for girls, unless you want to run fat rims etc..

for girls? it hink youll find he was singing its praises
-
Yes actually i was siging its praises :)
People who slag off MK2 PAS are usually those who don't have it and are jealous
The PAS system feels the same as non PAS when driving along, but makes parking easier. The PAS racks are also quicker than non-PAS, so better for driving 'spiritedly'
Also helps when fitting thicker tires, Matt you only have little spindly 13", probably why you find non-PAS ok
Having fitted PAS on my non-PAS GTI, I'm never going back :)
-
Haha sweet deal, did you fit it yourself? it's probably too biga job for a n00b like me, and too expensive to get it done professionally! hohum, something will turn up... 1.6 3dr black manual with PAS ohhhhhh this is guna b a long wait! lol
peace
-
Not that bad really, I'd much prefer to do the job on a carby due to the downpipe, splits really easy and no need to undo any of the manifolds to pull the engine out :)
-
I managed to grab a 1991 Ryder of eBay for £500 a few weeks ago with 65K on the clock. I have to admit I thought the steering was really heavy at first, then I took it to have the tracking checked out and turns up it was way out. 7mm I think the mechanic said but from the look on his face I think it was a lot :undecided:. Drives ok now .

I can confirm non PAS on big/fat rims is a no-no
