Ive been reading a few threads on here and it would seem the 8v owners are trying to believe that there car is a supercar well this maybe true!!!
My mate has a Lotus Esprit V8 on a 99 plate!!! i had the honor of him letting me use it to go down to london in ;D before i left he said see what you can get out of her wont ya! (as if he needed to ask) so on the way back whilst it was at night i decided to have a play!!
A 160mph was soon showing on the clock and things were going by very quick!!! all of a sudden the car changed lanes on its own with no movement of the wheels :o :-X needless to say i sh!t myslef pretty bad... I pulled over and rang my mate to tell him somethign was wrong with the car and i was calling the AA! i told him everything and he said "have you got the lights up" i said "yes it is night dumba$$" he said "ok!" then he said "have you got the sun visor down" i said
"no its night time" he said well pull the sun visor down so i did.....
and on the sunvisor is a warning from lotus to not exceed 120mph whilst the lights are up as this causes a spoiler effect which lifts the front end of the car off and will make you lose all steering capacity!!!!
so all you 8v owners it looks as if you were to come accross a lotus esprit V8 and want to have a play you will eventually beet him at top end if he has the sunvisor down and is aware of this design flaw by lotus!!! of course if he aint to bad he may crash in to you!

Why you guys always pickin on the 8v :(
Its the bollox for me at 22. Couldn't afford anything faster on insurance and anything faster would see me dead in days!!!
Decided when i'm 25 i'm gonna go mad and get the fastest VAG car i can afford. Until then the 8v is my friend. I thank VW for it every day coz if they hadn't buit it i wouldn't have a GTI at 22 without serious cash spare for insurance!

I was 18 when i bought my 8v and had only had a job for 5month!!!
U reckon i could've bought AND insured/taxed/serviced etc a VR6 on a '97 P plate? no.
8v is my happy friend and its respected on the road.

The insurance isnt that much different for a 16v is it?
I cant remember checking tbh.. only against the vr6 which is.. :o

insurance difference between an 8v and 16v at 18yr old = extorsionate cos the 16v is above grp 15!

When I was looking around for a fast Mk3 Golf I got some quotes for the relevant models.
GTi 8v - 700 quid from Tescos
GTi 16v - 750 quid from Tescos
VR6 - 780 from Elephant
However I was 22 at the time and had full no-claims, which may explain the parity between the three. I was interested in a VR6 but the newest I could afford was on an M plate, whilst I could have a P or R reg 8v or a P reg 16v. 16v's were like rocking horse poo when I was looking so I settled on the 8v. It was fast enough to have some serious fun in (altho the fact that I was upgrading from a Cinquecento may have helped this - don't mock, it was a Sporting, and ate Nova SR's for breakfast) and wouldn;t go pop at 100k miles like the VR6's I looked at. I tell you one thing aswell, from my test drive experience, the VR6 was much faster in a straight line yes, but the 8v felt so much keener in the corners. All that pig iron up front in the VR6 really does blunt the handling pretty badly.

Well - my criteria was a 5dr MkIII Gti - as this is a cash bought car and wer'e moving house + baby due etc etc , I wanted a solid clean example. Therfore for circa ?2k, I knew it would be an 8v Gti.
Got mine, happy with it, bodywork solid, engine pulls ok I guess, and a few electric bits and bobs and when I come to sell it (probably 12 months+) I probably won't have lost too much money it. What more could you ask for :)
