Just bought MK111 Gti 2.0 under the assumption it was an 8V and under the bonnet it think it is. However, i have just recieved paper work through from insurance, whom i gave reg of vehicle to them the day before, and on the paper it says it is registered as 16v and therefore i think i am paying a lot more for a car that is not as powerful. any ideas to whats going on here, or what i can do?
any help would be appreciated.

Take a photo of the engine . We can tell you which it is then .
Or tell us the engine code

This is a pic of the 2.0 16v engine.
I've heard of people trying to pass an 8v off as a 16v but not the other way around
-
Stomper, Where did you get the headlamps from and are they any good? Same goes for the ignition leads.
-
Unfortunately that isn't my car, it's a very rare 16v anniversary (one of 150 minus any that have been crashed!)
I got it off the web just to show jboulton what the engine looks like!
Here's a link to the website i got it from, you might be able to find out from the guy who posted it

Its extremely easy to distinguish!
A 16v has a huge shiny alloy induction manifold over the top of the engine with a great big "16V" stamped on it!
And its far faster of course!
-
16v faster! come on Len we all know the 8v are the quickest of the two!!!!!!!!!
OH dear, what have i gone and said
hahaha
FOR THE RECORD I KNOW A 16v WOULD TAKE MY 8v ANY DAY!....................................................unless 5th gear and all that fudge
-
Please , don't go down this road again(*) . Petty bickering isn't going to answer the original question .
That isn't an open invitation to argue about 1/4 mile times either
-
No idea about the car but no more 8V v 16V my heart cant take it lol
-
well it seems i have reignited an old age debate, i apologise.
from the photos and descriptions its then definetely an 8v, no doubt. the queston is why they have it registered as a 16v? i will phone them and tell them, but im worried that they are going to tell me where to go.from my calculations i think i am being charged nearly £100 more than i should be.
Thanks for your help,
time to do some investigating...

The other thing to bear in mind is it may have origionally been a 16v and for whatever reason, has had an 8v lump put in it. Not likely i wouldnt have thought, but possible
-
mate... u should be telling them where to go if they think u should pay 16v prices for an 8v car!!!
IIRC the 16v is 2 insurance groups higher than the 8v, it sits in the same group as the vr6!!!
following on from what golfpro said: you might wanna make sure the engine numbers on the v5 and the actual engine match, at least that would tell u if the car has the wrong engine in it. but as he said... it is very unlikely that it has had a less powerfull engine put in.

it is very unlikely that it has had a less powerfull engine put in.
You never can tell, sometimes people do strange things. Maybe a previous owner only had access to a 8v engine and it needed changing quickly for some reason?
