Title: coolant
Post by: yabbie on 24 January 2007, 20:46
hi all ive got a slight problem with my golf gti mk3 2 liter it over heated one day and ever since its never held the coolant at one temp ie everyday i check it its at a diffrent level ive changed the cap and still have this problem. when it first overheated i lost all power and saw alot of smoke behind me now on that same day i think i added abit to much oil in so i do think its got anything t5o do with it overheating but it did.

the on another time it over heated i was doing a little over the speed limit  and it did the same lost all power looked behind and saw a load of smoke check the engine and no coolant whats causing my problem oh and are the pipes meant to be really hard when really hot i could even squeeze them could some thing be block. i havent had the problem over heating for about 1 week but i have this problem with the coolant thanks

Get your head pressure tested, you may have small cracks in the head (cylinder). If so its a new engine mate.

Likely head gasket failure.

would i not get any of the mayo stuff ? forgot to say it only done it in the higher revs range. so you think it might be a new engine  but on the plus side i hear a can fit a 2.9 into the engine bay

just thinking about this would i not have a problem with my heating if the gasket was knackered

youd also have a loss in performance, it would constantly over heat, and youd possibly get some blue smoke coming from the exhaust. wat colour was this smoke when u noticed it the times is overheated?

you could just have a leak somewhere, which is resulting in coolant loss...

a head pressure check will tell u for defo weather the headgasket is gone, and even if it has, you might just get away with changing it.... if it has caused a crack in the head, then getting it skimmed might fix that, or... in a worse case senario youll need a new head, not a whole engine.
