Hi welcome good finding a car dont rush but im sure they are plenty of good ones out there. I think it must be a mk 3 I doubt 2k would buy a mk 4. Im Forum sponsor let let me know if you ever need any thing
-
Thanks chap thats appriciated, looking forward to being able to post my own pics of mk3, and joining the comunity, i like the web site and will no doubt come along to some events during the year
-
hello mate, looks like your looking for a mk3 if you have a look in the cars for sale section. there`s a few nice ones for sale in there
-
2k should get you a pretty good mk3 16v gti.
As rtuk said take your time to look at cars properly, don't rush.
One thing i found was people trying to pass an 8v off as a 16v, engine should look like this:

I was very lucky, found a 1 lady owner car with 70k on the clock back in september 2005, i paid £3k, bit steep but i knew it was a good un.
Since then put 20k on the odo and loving every minute of it
I've recently fitted the coilovers and spacers all round, bought the anniversary BBS wheels off a member of this forum last summer.
They are cracking cars, can do loads with them and they are so solid, try finding a ford or vauxhall of the same age that feels/looks as good!

another great looking gti, feelin alot more comfortable about finding my own now, thanks to all who have posted on this subject

One last point, have a look at this thread for things to look out for:

IT'S DONE! Gti purchased yesterday, give you a quick run down see what u think.
It's a five door 16v i believe it to be a colour concept, not sure it has the 16v badge on the front grill. I bought it from a trader it was a part ex priced to clear at 1800, i give 1500, unfortunately no SH but i'm gonna write to previous owner.
It's a 99% original car from what i could tell it's got 4 new tyres new front discs, dizzie and aux belt, i used the what to look out for string kindly pointed out to me and i couldn't fault the car, It pulls well through all gears, abs spot on hit the brakes at 60 no hands and it stopped in a straight line it's done 89000,
The bad points, cracked screen, theres a gater and plastic cowling missing where the steering coloum goes through bulk head, so you can hear the engine (easy fix) and the front bumper wants respraying due to a scuff on the OS and stone chips also part of the plastic side skirt is missin (wheres best for that sort of thing?)
What you reckon people?
Can any one tell me how to add an image?

I've just ordered two sill covers from volks-apart 02083096200 £22 each.
try mucho's for uploading your pics but you need to resize them
-
Nice one mate, can't wait to see the pics.
They didn't do a 16v colour concept by the way.
I use photobucket for my car photo's, http://photobucket.com/
Basically upload your photo's onto it then copy the full IMG file name into your post and it should pop up.
Hopefully see them soon

Nice work savage, looks clean and tidy. Told you photobucket was the way to go!!
Sounds like the problems are easy to fix.
I'd try and get some sort of service history, more for if you come to sell than anything.
Best place for odd bits and pieces are either in the parts for sale on forums or ebay.
Look out for people breaking whole cars that have had accident damage.
I've got lots off ebay, smoked front fog/indicator units, rear light clusters as one of mine had a crack in it, pair of electric mirrors as one stopped working, you'd be surprised how cheap you can get things for.
What have you got planned for it, wheels, suspension??
-
current plans for car are just to get it to a really good standard condition, probably chuck an induction kit on it just cos i love the note they they give an engine, as for mods wheels have nearly new tyres on, so will keep them for a while and then replace with maybe r32 wheels, gonna have a look at the mods section on the forum and get to a couple of meets to get some ideas.

Savage here
Just wanna share a little story with you guys, I picked up the new car today YES!!!
Anyways, I'm on me way home and feelin hungry so thought i'd go do me shoppin.
So new car tesco's car park (What ya gonna do) so I found a space with about three empty spaces on either side and proceeded to push round me shoppin cart hopin it would be o.k when i got back. So came out of the shop and there she was with two golfs next to her one on either side, RESPECT!!! :smug:

Glad you're enjoying gti ownership mate!
You mentioned R32 wheels? Gonna need some pretty serious arch work if you're going to try and lower it on those.
I get a bit of scrubbing with my 7x16's (spaced) and they're not that low!
I'd say no bigger than 17's in my opinion.
Enjoy yourself
-
Hi mate,
Congrats on your purchase, i'm sure you'll enjoy her. Just a quick message to say make sure you check out all the wheel mods fully before you shell out cash.
If you go for some makes and models you'll need adapters or spacers and putting massive wheels on will cost a fortune in rolling arches and suspension. Make sure you plan your wheels carefully. I run 17in Rial's and am in process of lookin for a suspension kit.
Best thing to do is ask on the forum if you've got a question, chaps on here have helped me no end already and i've only been around a couple of weeks!

More tales of new gti ownership,
Waiting to give the car a good service before i go to mad, but the sun came out today so went for a leisurly one down the lanes.
I may have mentioned before that i drive new cars on a daily basis as i work for a leading car hire company, but i kidd you not driving that ten year old gti is a better experience than driving eighty percent of the cars at work i.e the mercs and alfa's (159's r good thou). An as i arrived home, what lets me into my turning mkII gti with a little nod of the head.
Re. the wheels, gonna just stick with the standard alloys for a while i don't intend to distract to much from the original car.
Rock on!!
-
see you should have got a mk2 then you could have flashed lights !
