Title: Suspension on 16v

Hi there,

I've got a mildly modified mk3 16v Gti and after fitting new 17in alloys I want to get the car lowered. I can't stretch to coilovers so any sugestions for a good spring+shocks kit would be great.

One other thing, I've heard you can only lower the 16v by 35mm-40mm due to the anti roll bar on this model. Anyone know anything bout this?

Car is a 96 (P) model if that makes any difference.

I've got the same car and have moved from Eibach springs with Boge Turbo shox to Wietec set damper shox and 30mm springs. These are fantastic as I do track/driver days :smiley:

Wietec do a front coilover with 4 point adjustable rear for about £300-350 and are fantasic as you can go from 10mm to 50mm front and rear.

Give Storm Developements a call http://stormdevelopments.co.uk/ (http://stormdevelopments.co.uk/) and speak to Andy or Miles. They can do the fitting as well for very reasonable rates.

All really depends on what you want it for. If you want to go quite low for cosmetics then go for the coil/set ones I mentioned above, if you want performance mainly then the ones I used are great, although the fronts are a little higher than I'd like if going for looks...but as proven on my trackday last week, the performance of mine where amazing considering I was up against Evos, Scoobs and Celicas :smiley:


I run 17" OZ polaris with 205/40/17s and with the Eibachs they did catch slightly without damaging the car....but as said I do track/driver days and the treatment is more than you'd get with even hard driving on the road...but the new ones do not catch at all as have the rears set on level2...they go to 4 :evil:

It's mk4's that have problem's with anti roll bar's when lowering..never heard any mk3's suffering and there's many on here with 60mm+ drop's

Rich,

I've got my 16v lowered more than 60mm and no probs with anti-roll bar, that's the mk4's as suggested.

I went for the Weitec GT kit, height adjustable all round, fixed damping. It's the GTN kit you want to look at, coilover fronts (like on mine) stepped rear struts allowing you some adjustment on height (you can upgrade the rears down the line aswell if you want to).

The Weitec's are great quality kits, galvanised body (no rusting problems when you come to adjust the ride height 2-3 years down the line!)

I've found them to be very comfy while vastly reducing body roll.

cheers mate, your cars's lookin great after the drop, will def take a look at the kit you suggested. was originally going to save for coilovers but friend had some and they rusted badly withing 12 months so not going to bother.

The Weitec's have a galvanised thread which largely prevents rusting.

Thread is a lot coarser than say FK's aswell.
