After factory fitted alarm ??

Definately not fitted when it was made. A 97 should have immobiliser.

Yea it will be to do with your alarm/immobiliser.
You should have something on your keyring that fits into it. If not get in touch with previous owner.
It should be used to disable your CAT 1 alarm/immobiliser in case of a fault. i.e. your alarm goes haywire and wont switch off!

Its good you have got the fob.

The missus didnt have the fob for her Polo, the alarm / immobiliser went haywire and the AA had to rip all the glove box open to disable it !
