Title: mk3 gearbox green cap

hi everybody. this is my first post on this site. hopefully somebody can help me.
what is the green plastic bit on top of the gearbox on my mk3 2.0 8v gti.
and most importantly is it supposed to be sealed

You can take that out to see the timing mark's on the flywheel (these golf's have the flywheel on the outside of the clutch).......it should be screwed in but i can't see the point of fully sealing it as I dosen't hold oil etc

they're about £2 from VW. Mine was "misplaced" after a service.

best fill it in.

Imagine if you droped a screw or summat in there!  :sick:

The hole in the middle is where you would fit a diagnostic machine timing sender used by vw dealers. as said above it can be removed so you can see the TDC marks. It is not an important part really.
